Complete Lakeland Fells by Bill Birkett

537 of 541 Birketts on this site

Bill Birkett set out to catalogue every distinct Lakeland top of at least 1,000 feet (305 m) lying within the National Park boundary — 541 fells in all, the most exhaustive of the popular Lakeland lists. Where Wainwright was selective, Birkett is comprehensive: his round takes in every named knott, crag and subsidiary summit the bigger lists pass by, from the great peaks down to obscure tops few walkers ever name. First published by Collins Willow in 1994 as Complete Lakeland Fells, the book sets out over 120 classic walks linking the tops, and the full round — now affectionately called “doing the Birketts” — has become the natural, and far longer, next step for walkers who have completed the 214.

About the author

Bill Birkett is one of Britain's leading mountain writers and photographers and a lifelong climber, with more than thirty books on the Lakes to his name. He belongs to a celebrated Lakeland climbing dynasty: his father, Jim Birkett, was among the finest rock climbers of his generation, and the family has shaped Lakeland climbing across three generations from their home in Little Langdale.

Map shows the 537 fells on this list that have a guide on this site (live pages) — not the full national list.
