Fellbarrow at 416m (1,365ft) is a heathery summit above Lorton Vale, giving fine views of the vale and Bassenthwaite Lake. Wainwright included it in his Western Fells guide.

Is Fellbarrow an easy walk?

Mostly, yes — these are the low, green, farmed fells north of Loweswater. Our round to Fellbarrow and Low Fell is 10.8 km with 446 m of ascent, a comfortable half day, with no scramble on it; we grade its exposure moderate.

Two cautions. We grade the steepness of that round severe — the pull out of the valley is sharper than the height suggests, and the grass is slick when wet. And the summits are rounded, grassy and near-identical, with more than one candidate top, so it is a compass day if the cloud is down. The bigger Loweswater circuit is 19.1 km and 1068 m.

The 77 stops at Lanthwaite Green Farm (opposite). From there it is 3.2 km and 118 m of ascent to the start of Around Loweswater — a route we rate Severe overall (hardest: steepness) — a walk in before the walk. And the same back: about 25.6 km in all, with the walk. Seasonal: the 77 does not run all year. 1 November 2026 is its last day. It returns on 22 March 2027. How the skyline, light and sightlines are computed

Computed, not photographed. First light is the first minute the sun’s upper limb clears this summit’s own skyline and last light the last minute it is still clear of it, both solved against the 360° horizon profile behind The View from Fellbarrow - Mosser Fell. Almanac sunrise and sunset are the flat-horizon convention. Every time carries a ± band from the 30 m elevation model — it smooths arêtes and cornices, so nothing here claims better than five minutes.
