Lakeland Fellranger — Mark Richards (2003–13)

Lakeland Fellranger by Mark Richards

225 of 230 Fellrangers on this site

Mark Richards' Lakeland Fellranger is a modern pictorial series, published by Cicerone, that re-walks and re-draws the principal Lakeland fells for a new generation — 230 of them across eight area volumes, completed in 2013. In the Wainwright tradition it pairs hand-drawn ridge diagrams and summit panoramas with detailed, up-to-date route descriptions, access notes and ascent maps, but organises the fells by valley base rather than by Wainwright's seven regions. Recently revamped by Cicerone under the title Walking the Lake District Fells, the guides are prized for their clarity and for covering every sensible route to each summit.

About the author

Mark Richards began as a Cotswold farmer and turned to guidebook writing in 1973 with the direct encouragement of Alfred Wainwright, who became a friend and mentor. Decades later, again urged on by an elderly Wainwright, he set about his own illustrated Lakeland guides, drawing every diagram by hand — completing the eight-volume Fellranger series in 2013.

Map shows the 225 fells on this list that have a guide on this site (live pages) — not the full national list.
