Stony Cove Pike (Caudale Moor)

The day we summited this one was one of the windiest days I, personally can recall in the Lakes. We parked up at Hartsop and it was fine as its sheltered down there. As soon as we got a quarter of the way up Hartsop Dodd the wind really started to pick up. We were at 45 degrees into the wind to stay on our feet. Luckily I had some paintballing goggles in my rucksack and gave them to my son. It was slow going up to the first Wainwright. But as we used the stone wall from around there up to Stony Cove Pike the wind relented a little, but the bogginess didn't. Most people will try and bag Thorwaite Crag on the same day, and this fell isn't as imposing as that, but after putting in the effort to get up here, its not a bad little fell. If you were bagging Birketts at the same time its worth a detour over to that fell of the same name - its just to the west and only around 8 meters of elevation lost - which is much easier than the traverse over to Thornthwaite Crag as that is a very tricky affair in the wind and rain as its a climb down. The only good thing is that if you need another break from the elements you can rest up in the col between the two as its sheltered on three sides from the wind - its just the southerly side that's exposed.
