Terms, Conditions & Cookie Policy
Last updated: 1 August 2026
Please read these terms carefully before using this website. By accessing or using hikes.guide ("the Website"), you agree to be bound by these terms. If you do not agree, please stop using the Website.
1. About the Website
hikes.guide is a free, non-commercial information service. It helps walkers in the English Lake District identify Birkett summits that can be combined with Wainwright and Outlying Fell routes. The Website provides maps, parking suggestions, public transport information, and weather forecasts drawn from third-party sources.
2. Acceptance of Terms
These terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and the operator of hikes.guide, governed by the laws of England and Wales. Your continued use of the Website constitutes ongoing acceptance of any updates to these terms. The date of the most recent revision is shown above.
3. Permitted Use
You may use the Website for personal, non-commercial purposes only. You must not:
- copy, reproduce, or redistribute Website content for commercial purposes without prior written permission;
- use automated tools (bots, scrapers, crawlers) to extract data from the Website in bulk;
- attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or gain unauthorised access to any part of the Website or its infrastructure;
- use the Website in any way that breaches applicable law or regulation.
4. Information Accuracy & Hiking Safety
The Website is provided for general information and planning purposes only. While reasonable care is taken to keep information up to date, no warranty is given as to the accuracy, completeness, or fitness for purpose of any content, including:
- maps, distances, and route data;
- parking and access information;
- public transport timetables and routes;
- weather forecasts.
Hillwalking is an inherently hazardous activity. You are solely responsible for assessing conditions, carrying appropriate equipment, and making safe decisions in the field. Always verify bus times independently via Stagecoach (opens in new tab) or Traveline (opens in new tab) before travel. Weather forecasts are provided as a guide only and conditions in mountainous terrain can change rapidly.
5. Third-Party Data & Intellectual Property
The Website uses data and services from the following third parties; their respective licences and terms apply:
- Mapping: OpenStreetMap contributors (opens in new tab) (© OpenStreetMap, ODbL) and OpenTopoMap (opens in new tab) (CC-BY-SA).
- Hill data: Database of British and Irish Hills (DoBIH) (opens in new tab).
- Weather: Open-Meteo (opens in new tab).
All original content on the Website (text, design, code) is the intellectual property of the Website operator. Nothing on the Website grants you any licence to use that content beyond the permitted use described in section 3.
6. External Links
The Website contains links to external websites for convenience. These links do not constitute an endorsement of those sites or their content. The Website operator has no control over, and accepts no responsibility for, the content, privacy practices, or availability of any external site.
7. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law:
- the Website is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis without any warranty of any kind;
- the Website operator will not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or special loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, the Website or its content;
- in particular, the operator accepts no liability for injury, loss, or damage suffered during any hillwalking or outdoor activity planned using this Website.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under English law.
8. Privacy & Cookies
In short: you don't need an account or to give any personal information to use the Website; we set no cookies of our own, no analytics and no advertising networks are used; and your fell-bagging progress is saved only in your own browser, never sent to us. The one exception is optional — some pages can show photographs embedded from Instagram (Meta), which set Meta's cookies only if you choose to load them, via our cookie banner or by clicking a card; you'll only see a consent prompt where that content is offered, and you can change your choice anytime via "Cookie settings" in the footer. Otherwise the only outbound requests are for map tiles and weather, and any hosting server logs are held under UK GDPR / the Data Protection Act 2018. Full detail — including the Instagram embeds, your rights and how to contact us about privacy — is in our Privacy Policy.
9. Changes to These Terms
The Website operator reserves the right to update these terms at any time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be revised accordingly. Continued use of the Website after any change constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
10. Governing Law
These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising under or in connection with these terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
11. Contact
If you have any questions about these terms or the Website, please see our Contact page.
