Getting to the Lake District fells

Find your way to a walk by train, bus, boat or car, and work out the journey back.

This page covers selected gateways and connections for walkers, not every station, bus stop, landing or car park in the Lake District. Every page below holds its own times, stops and sources. This one points you at the right one.

Check the way back before you set off. The last trains and where to find your stop's timetable are under Getting home.

Stations, buses, boats and car parks on one map

Choose a mark to open the page that holds its detail: the station, the bus stop, the landing or the car park. Everything on the map is also listed with it, by name.

Show on the map

Dashed: a heritage railway or a seasonal bus.

Hollow diamond: a landing out of its season, with no boat calling.

Bus lines join the stops in the order the bus calls at them, not along the road. The car parks are the ones a walk on this site starts from. Drawn from OpenStreetMap (opens in new tab) (ODbL), the National Park Authority’s boundary, and the data behind the train, bus, boat and parking pages.

By train

Can I get to the fells by train? Yes, to the edge of them. No railway crosses the fells, so the last part of the trip is a bus, a boat or your own feet, and the station you arrive at decides which fells are close.

By bus

The buses link the towns, the stations and the valleys, and many walks start near a stop. The routes, the stops and their timetables are on the bus pages.

By car, and where to park

Most walks start from a car park. The parking pages say who runs each one and whether it charges, when people have arrived at the National Park's own car parks, and what to do if yours is full.

On the way

By boat

Some lakes have a scheduled boat that lands near the start of a walk, and some have none. The boat page says which is which, who runs each one and where it lands.

By bike

We do not publish cycle routes of our own. These official and charity pages do.

Bringing a bike on the train? Each train company sets its own rules, so check theirs before you travel: Northern (opens in new tab), Avanti West Coast (opens in new tab) and TransPennine Express (opens in new tab).

Getting home

Nothing on this site plans the whole way home yet. What it has is below; check the operator's own times on the day.

Without a car

Whole days that need no car at all, and the fells a bus gets you to.
