Six. That is how many walks in the whole of the Lake District you can pair with a charging point you are actually allowed to use, at the place you park, on a walk long enough for the charge to be worth having. I expected the number to be small. I did not expect it to be six.

I drive a plug-in hybrid estate, which makes me roughly the easiest case there is — a small battery, a modest onboard charger, and a petrol engine to fall back on if none of it works out. If the Lake District is awkward for me, it is a good deal worse for anyone in a proper electric car. And it is awkward. The six walks are not spread across the Park; they are Grasmere, Coniston and Glenridding, three places you could tour in an afternoon. Rosthwaite and Stonethwaite — which are how you reach Great Gable and the Scafells — are more than eight kilometres from the nearest charger.

The gap, first

The honest headline is not how many trailheads have a charger. It is how few.

We publish parking for 157 places across the Lake District and its edges. Of those, 23 have a charging point of some kind within 250 m and 18 more within a kilometre — but 47 have nothing recorded within 5 km at all. Those are not obscure places. They are the valleys people drive to in order to walk.

The twenty furthest of 47. Distances are straight-line to the nearest charging point recorded in OpenStreetMap, which is a floor on the real driving distance, not the real distance.

Every one of those distances is a straight line to a charging point recorded in OpenStreetMap contributors (opens in new tab), so the real drive is longer. And they are a floor on the problem in the other direction too: a charger existing 4 km away is not the same as a charger you can use, at a power that means anything, while you are on the hill for five hours.

The walks that do work

These are all of them — 6 walks in the whole National Park that start within 600 m of parking with a verified, publicly usable charger beside it, and that take at least three hours. The three-hour floor is a judgement, not a measurement: below it the sums stop meaning anything, and calling a ninety-minute lake circuit “charge while you climb” would be selling you a rounding error.

Read the kWh as a ceiling and then take some off. It is the post’s rated power times our time estimate for the walk, and the thing most likely to make it smaller is your own car — see the method section.

Every charger we could verify

51 candidates were checked and 18 survived. The ones that did not are not hidden: they are named in the method section, with the reason.

Every charger verified against an operator's own page, checked 5 August 2026. Power and price are the operator's figures, not ours.

How this was checked, and what it cannot tell you

There is no national list any more. The National Chargepoint Registry was decommissioned on 28 November 2024, and under the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 every operator publishes its own open data while nobody is required to gather it up. So this was done the slow way: OpenStreetMap contributors (opens in new tab) as a lead list, and then each lead chased to the operator’s own page. 32 leads could not be confirmed that way and were dropped rather than published as unknowns.

What I make of it

Don’t plan a walk around a charger yet. Arrive with enough range to get home regardless and treat a post at the trailhead as a bonus you happened to catch; do that and you will never have a bad day because of it.

There is one honest exception, and it is my own car. The kWh figures on this page are ceilings, and the thing most likely to shrink them is the reader’s vehicle — but for a small-battery plug-in hybrid that cuts the other way. Five hours on the hill against even the 3 kW post at Grasmere is not a top-up for me, it is most of the way to a full battery, and it is the difference between driving home on petrol and driving home on electricity. For someone with a large battery the same post is a rounding error. Same charger, same five hours, completely different day. That is why this page gives you kWh and not a percentage: the percentage is yours, not ours.

I should also be straight about how thin the good news is. Three of the six pairings are that one Grasmere post, and two more are the same post at Glenridding — so “six walks” is really three car parks doing all the work. Fixing that is not complicated or expensive next to what has already been spent on visitor infrastructure here: put the posts where walkers already park. The Authority knows exactly where that is, because it sells the tickets. A 7 kW post at Seatoller or Mardale Head would do more for low-carbon access to the high fells than another rapid charger on the A591. Until then this is a gap map that happens to contain six good days out.

Spot a data error? Request a correction — every figure here is sourced and dated, and genuine mistakes are fixed promptly.

Nobody paid for a place on this page. No charging network, operator or car maker has been asked for, or has given, anything — the gaps are published as readily as the provision.
