⛰️ Events & festivals

What's on in the Lake District — verified, month by month, with the nearest town, indoor/outdoor and family-friendly noted.

The Lake District has one of the most distinctive events calendars in Britain — a summer and autumn full of traditional Lakeland sports (guides' fell races, Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling, hound trailing), agricultural shows and shepherds' meets, plus music, food, literary and film festivals and some gloriously odd local traditions. This page lists what's on month by month, each tagged with its nearest town (linked to our full guide), whether it's indoor or outdoor, and whether it's family-friendly.

We only show a firm date once it's confirmed against the organiser's own site; where a date isn't out yet we say “usually [month]” and link the organiser. Dates change — always check the official link before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

What's on in the Lake District this month?
Our coming up list shows the next events by date, and the month-by-month calendar covers the year ahead. The Lakes' calendar peaks in summer and early autumn with traditional sports days and agricultural shows, then turns to festivals and festive events through November and December. Always check each event's official link for the confirmed date.
What are the biggest festivals and events in the Lake District?
Among the best known: Grasmere Lakeland Sports & Show and Ambleside Sports (traditional Lakeland sports), the big agricultural shows (Keswick, Hawkshead, Westmorland, Cartmel), the Great North Swim on Windermere (the UK's biggest open-water swim), Keswick Mountain Festival in spring and the world-renowned Kendal Mountain Festival in November.
What family-friendly events are there in the Lake District?
Most of the traditional agricultural shows and sports days are excellent for families — animals, displays, races and stalls all in one field (Grasmere Sports, Ambleside Sports, Hawkshead and Keswick shows). The quirky traditions (Egremont Crab Fair, Penrith Winter Droving) and the Christmas events are great with children too. Look for the family icon on each entry in the calendar.
Are there free events in the Lake District?
Yes — several of the most characterful are free to watch, including the Grasmere Rushbearing, Penrith Winter Droving's torchlit procession, the Keswick Victorian Fayre and the towns' Christmas lights and markets. Many ticketed shows are still cheap for families. Free entries are flagged in the calendar.
What are the traditional Cumbrian shows and sports?
The Lakes has a distinctive cluster of traditional events most travel guides skip: the agricultural shows and shepherds' meets (showing Herdwick and Swaledale sheep), the Lakeland sports days (guides' fell races, Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling, hound trailing), and oddities like the World Gurning Championships at Egremont Crab Fair and the World's Biggest Liar at Santon Bridge. See the by type groupings.
What events are on near Windermere, Keswick, Ambleside, Grasmere, Coniston or Hawkshead?
Use the events near each town section, which groups events by their nearest base and links our full town guides — Keswick, Windermere/Bowness, Ambleside, Grasmere, Coniston and Hawkshead. Each town guide also has the parking, getting-there and walks to plan a day around an event.
Are the dates on this page confirmed?
We only show a firm date once it's confirmed against the organiser's own site; where a date isn't yet announced we say "usually [month]" and link the organiser so you can check. Dates and details can change, so always confirm on the official link before travelling.
