Accessibility
hikes.guide is written and built by one person, and I want it to work for everyone who walks, including people who use a screen reader, keyboard, magnification or high contrast. This page says what I aim for, what has been checked, what is known not to work well yet, and how to tell me about a problem.
What I aim for
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The site does not yet claim to meet them: the checks below are a sample, not a full assessment.
What has been checked
In October 2026 an outside technical audit looked at 35 representative pages and the shared code behind them. It was a desk review of the code, with a sample of journeys tried in one desktop browser; it was not a full WCAG assessment, and no disabled users or screen readers were part of it. It found real problems, and these were fixed in the same week:
- text that was too faint to read, including a water-safety warning in dark mode
- the hourly weather strip, which screen readers could not step through
- the “mark as bagged” buttons on fell lists, which sat inside the fell’s link
- result counts on the homepage and Features filters, which were not announced
- a missing “skip to main content” link on fell and route pages
- unlabelled form fields and decorative drawings read out as unnamed images
- the RoutePark screens, which lost your place when they changed
Known limitations
- Maps and terrain graphics (route maps, the skyline, the relief map) are visual. The ones the audit looked at have a written alternative beside them (stage notes, the skyline as a list, height figures), but I have not yet checked every one, or tested whether those alternatives work well with a screen reader, and the maps themselves are not fully usable without sight.
- GPX downloads are data files for GPS devices and apps, not documents.
- Screen readers, high zoom, small screens and touch have not yet been tested systematically.
- Third-party services (the newsletter sign-up, external forms and embedded content) are outside my control.
- The Hikes Today app is a separate service and was not part of this review.
Tell me about a problem
