The National Park Authority released every pay-and-display ticket sold at 19 of its car parks, 17 August 2024 to 31 March 2026, timed by the machine. A ticket is an arrival. Put the 427,444 of them on a clock and the car parks sort themselves into two kinds.

All 19, ranked by the share before 10am
At Glenridding, New Dungeon Ghyll, Cow Bridge, Coniston Old Station and Brown Howe a third of the day’s tickets, give or take, are bought before ten in the morning. At Hammarbank, Hawkshead and Ravenglass it is one in twenty. The first group are the car parks under the fells; the second are village and lakeshore car parks. Same Authority, same machines, same tariffs; what differs is who is parking and what they came to do.

The weekend moves the fell car parks an hour earlier
38% of all tickets are bought on a Saturday or Sunday, so the weekday shape is the common one. The weekend shape is the one that matters if that is when you walk. At the fell car parks the busiest hour moves from 10:00 to 09:00 and the share before 10am climbs past forty percent. The village car parks do not move at all.

August Saturdays
The one cut that gets closest to the question in the title. On a Saturday in August at Cow Bridge, 32% of the day’s tickets are bought before nine, and the busiest hour is 08:00 to 09:00. That is what the data says. It does not say whether there was space at any of those times, and this page will not.

What this cannot tell you. A ticket is an arrival, not a stay, so nothing here says when a car park runs out of space, or whether it did. We hold a marked-bay count for one of the 19, and the operator publishes none for the rest, so arrivals cannot be set against spaces either. Season tickets, permit holders, Blue Badge holders and people who do not pay are not transactions. RingGo phone payments are a separate channel, held by zone and month, and are not in any figure on this page. The machine records begin in August 2024, so nothing here compares with earlier years.
Where this comes from
Raw data: Lake District National Park Authority, FOI/2026.500, disclosed by the Authority’s Visitor Services Manager on 1 September 2026 and 2 September 2026. The aggregation by hour, by day type and by month is ours, not the Authority’s: it declined to produce an hour-of-day report and released the transactions instead.
