The short answer
Come into Wasdale from the north and the last fuel is Bridge End Garage, Egremont. After it there are 24.5 km with nothing.
Every dead-end valley in the Lake District is 10–18 km from a filling station. That part is dull and consistent. What is not consistent is which station, because it depends entirely on the road you came in on — and the difference is bigger than the drive.
Eskdale (Boot) is the clearest case. The nearest fuel to it is Holmrook, A595, 12.0 km away. But coming in from M6 J37 you do not go past it: the last station on that road is Troutbeck Bridge, Windermere, and after it there are 28.2 km with nothing — 16.2 km more than the nearest-fuel figure suggests.
Fuel varies far less than food does. Across the seven valleys the last filling station ranges from 9.9 km to 18.2 km — a factor of 1.8. The last shop ranges from 0.2 km at Glenridding to 13.3 km at Seathwaite (Borrowdale), a factor of 66. If you are going to be caught out, it will be by the sandwich, not the petrol.
The last chance, valley by valley

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eskdale (Boot) | M6 J37 | Troutbeck Bridge, Windermere then 28.2 km with nothing last 16 km on Colwith Bridge, Wrynose Pass, Hardknott Pass, Whahouse Bridge | 07:00-22:30 daily | Holmrook, A595 12.0 km |

| Buttermere | Bothel | Oakhurst, Cockermouth — 983 m off the road then 15.7 km with nothing | Open 24 hours | Oakhurst, Cockermouth 17.0 km |
| Seathwaite (Borrowdale) | Bothel | High Hill, Keswick then 14.2 km with nothing | 07:00-20:00 daily | High Hill, Keswick 14.2 km |
| Seathwaite (Borrowdale) | M6 J40 | Derwent, Keswick then 14.9 km with nothing | 07:00-22:00 daily | High Hill, Keswick 14.2 km |
| Mardale Head | M6 J39 | Bridge End Garage, Bampton — 588 m off the road then 9.9 km with nothing last 15 km on Keld Lane, Grange Field | no published hours | Bridge End Garage, Bampton 9.9 km |
| Mardale Head | M6 J40 | Bridge End Garage, Bampton then 9.9 km with nothing last 16 km on Helton Road, Bampton Bridge | no published hours | Bridge End Garage, Bampton 9.9 km |
Two of these roads carry no filling station at all. That is not a gap in our data — it is the finding.
Out of hours
Sparse, and worth knowing exactly how sparse. These are the stations in this area recorded as open 24 hours in the government’s statutory fuel-price register, checked 8 August 2026. Every one of them is outside the valleys.
| Station | Where | Brand |
|---|---|---|
| Asda Bridge Lane Express Petrol | Bridge Lane, Penrith, CA11 8JB | Esso |
| Asda Kendal | Burton Road, Kendal LA9 7JA | Asda |
| Killington Lake services Connect | M6 SOUTHBOUND junction 37, KENDAL, LA8 0NW | BP |
| Oakhurst, Cockermouth | Lamplugh Road, Cockermouth CA13 0QT | Esso |
| Shell Penrith | Victoria Road, Penrith, CA11 8HU | Shell |
Everything else closes. The earliest opening we found anywhere is 06:00 and the latest closing is 22:30, so a genuinely early start or a late arrival means arriving with fuel already in the car.
Penrith Truckstop (AWJ) is open 24 hours and you almost certainly cannot use it. It is a commercial truckstop: seven diesel pumps, no petrol at all, and fuel sold on UK Fuels or Keyfuels cards only. In the operator’s own words, it cannot take cash or card payments for fuel.
It is here because it looks perfect on a map — open all night, half a mile off the motorway, right where you want it — and it is worth knowing before you drive in at two in the morning.

Shops and cash
| Valley | Last shop | Last cash machine |
|---|---|---|
| Buttermere | Lorton Village Shop 10.1 km | a cash machine in Keswick 14.6 km |
| Eskdale (Boot) | Eskdale Stores 3.7 km | a cash machine in Eskdale Green 3.7 km |
| Glenridding | Glenridding Mini Market 0.2 km | Glenridding Mini Market 0.2 km |
| Langdale (ODG) | Langdale Co-operative Society 4.4 km | a cash machine in Grasmere 9.5 km |
| Mardale Head | Bampton Valley Stores 10.0 km | a cash machine in Penrith 23.0 km |
| Seathwaite (Borrowdale) | Open All Hours 13.3 km | The Cumberland 13.5 km |
| Wasdale Head | Budgens 13.1 km | Budgens 13.1 km |
Two of these were corrected by local knowledge rather than by data. The map data gave Glenridding a cash machine 14.8 km away in Ambleside, because it records no machine at the village shop — but the Mini Market has one, which moves that answer to 0.2 km. The same was true at Gosforth. The absence of a recorded cash machine is not evidence that there is none, and on this page it never has been.
Opening hours for shops are deliberately not published here. They change often, they go stale quietly, and a wrong one is worse than none — check with the shop.

A word about Tebay
Tebay sits on the M6 between junctions 38 and 39 — north of the junctions most Lake District traffic actually uses. So whether you pass it depends on which valley you are heading for, not simply on which way you are driving.
- Northbound up the M6, you pass Tebay only if you are carrying on to J39 or J40 — Shap, Penrith, Ullswater, Mardale, Borrowdale and round to the north-west. If your run starts at J36 or J37 for Langdale, Eskdale or Wasdale, you left the motorway well to the south and never see it.
- Southbound from Carlisle or Scotland, J40 comes first, so anyone bound for Ullswater or Keswick turns off before Tebay. You only pass it going right through to the southern end of the park.
- From the east on the A66 from Scotch Corner, or from Yorkshire on the A65 and A590, Tebay is not on your route at all.
If you do pass it, it is genuinely part of the drive for a lot of people — the farm shop, the view up to the fells, the fact that it is not like other motorway services. But it sits outside every corridor on this page: the nearest valley to it is Mardale Head, and that is 20.3 km from J39 before you add the motorway run north to reach the junction. So it belongs in your journey rather than in the table above. Fill up there if it suits you — just know that it will not be your last chance, and it is not a reason to pass a station nearer the valley.
Where this comes from
Every distance on this page is measured along the road network from the trailhead we publish for that valley to the station itself — never as a straight line. Straight-line distance is wrong here by tens of percent, and in a dead-end valley it can be wrong about the direction as well as the distance.
No drive times. We compute walking times because we have calibrated them against real walks; we have no equivalent for driving, so a drive time here would look measured and would not be. Distances only, and what you do with them is your call.
Filling stations were verified against the operator’s own source or the UK Fuel Finder statutory register — the scheme every fuel retailer in the country has had to report to since February 2026. OpenStreetMap was used to find candidates and is never published as a fact on its own. Where an operator publishes no hours, this page says nothing about hours rather than guessing.
Three entries that look like filling stations in the underlying map data are not, and were removed by hand:
- Mill Garage — a motor-servicing and garden-machinery business, not a forecourt. Its own site lists vehicle servicing, Calor and Camping Gas, bulk paraffin, quad bikes and mowers, and no road fuel of any kind.
- Dawsons Fuels — a solid-fuel merchant - kiln-dried logs, smokeless fuel, wood pellets and coal, delivered. The kind of fuel you burn at home, not the kind you put in a car.
- Ullswater Road Garage — a map record in KENDAL carrying the name of a real filling station 35 km away in Penrith. The Penrith one is genuine and is listed above on the M6 J40 runs; this Kendal node is not a forecourt and has been removed.
This page is a dated snapshot and will go out of date. Everything here was checked on 8 August 2026. Treat it as good until about 8 August 2027, and expect it to be re-checked before the 1 March 2027 season. A village garage can stop selling fuel without telling anyone, and the smallest ones — which are exactly the ones that matter most here — are not required to appear in any register.
The strip-maps are the tables, drawn. Every filling station marked on them is the same number in the table beneath it — nothing is measured or rounded for the drawing, and where a road carries no fuel the ribbon shows the gap rather than leaving a blank. The one mark that carries no distance and no table row is Penrith Truckstop, which is on the ribbon precisely because it is not a filling station you can use.
Every station, distance and opening time here is read from the dataset above rather than typed into the page, so a correction is made once and takes effect everywhere.
