High Pike at 657m (2,156ft), above Scandale, is a grassy summit with rocky outcrops at the top, on the ridge above Ambleside north of Low Pike, giving wide views south across Windermere and north to the Fairfield group.

Rydal Hall's own car park, for visitors to the hall, its gardens, the waterfalls and The Tea Room; it charges, and visitors to the falls park here. The hall's overflow car park is about 80 m south-west. The Lower Falls and The Grot are about 150 m on foot through the grounds.

Kirkstone Pass summit (private, paid) — 2.8 km from summit (straight line)

The big car park opposite the Kirkstone Pass Inn, the start for Red Screes (30 min to the top), Caudale Moor and Middle Dodd. Unpaved. It was the National Park Authority's until June 2026, when the Authority handed the lease back; it belongs to the inn site's owner and has been charged since July 2026 - read the sign, and do not assume the pub's custom covers it (BBC and local press, read by Lee 8 September 2026).

A lay-by on the A592, 230 m north of the Kirkstone Pass summit in a straight line, on the Patterdale side. The 'Caudale Moor & St Raven's Edge' route passes about 40 m away; it starts at Hartsop village, 5.2 km on foot, the nearest route start. Free (OSM-tagged).

St Raven's Edge, north-west car park (free) — 2.8 km from summit (straight line)

A small car park on the A592, 500 m north of the Kirkstone Pass summit in a straight line, on the Patterdale side. The 'Caudale Moor & St Raven's Edge' route passes about 25 m away; it starts at Hartsop village, 4.3 km away in a straight line (this pin sits too far from the mapped paths to measure a walk). Free (OSM-tagged).

The 555 and 599 stop at Rydal, at White Moss Common. From there it is 2.3 km and 121 m of ascent to the start of Fairfield Horseshoe — a route we rate Hard overall (hardest: distance, steepness, navigation and exposure) — a walk in before the walk. And the same back: about 21.5 km in all, with the walk. As timetabled from 27 October to 1 November. Towards Kendal (555): Tuesday to Saturday 23:07; Sunday 20:07 to Windermere, 19:37 to Kendal. Towards Bowness on Windermere (599): Tuesday to Sunday 19:20 to Bowness on Windermere, 17:30 to Bowness on Windermere Braithwaite Fold Car Park. Year-round, roughly hourly. The backbone bus of the A591 — ideal for Helvellyn (Wythburn/Swirls), Fairfield, the Central fells and anything around Grasmere/Rydal. From Penrith, take the X4/X5 to Keswick and change.

Wainwright included it in the Eastern Fells, noting its pleasant, open summit and good views across the Ambleside valley. The ascent from Ambleside via Scandale is a steady climb through typical fell country. Often overlooked in favour of the more dramatic Eastern Fells, it rewards the unhurried walker with fine views of the southern Lake District.

How the skyline, light and sightlines are computed

Computed, not photographed. First light is the first minute the sun’s upper limb clears this summit’s own skyline and last light the last minute it is still clear of it, both solved against the 360° horizon profile behind The View from High Pike (Scandale). Almanac sunrise and sunset are the flat-horizon convention. Every time carries a ± band from the 30 m elevation model — it smooths arêtes and cornices, so nothing here claims better than five minutes.
