📖 Key Information

Grey Friar at 773m (2,536ft) is the most westerly of the main Coniston Fells, a broad, grassy dome that Wainwright described as giving the best views of any of the group — particularly westward to the Scafell massif across the Duddon valley, and south-west to the coast and the sea. The ascent from Wrynose Pass is short and straightforward, making it one of the easiest 2,500-footers in the district. Most commonly combined with Swirl How and Great Carrs as part of the Coniston ridge circuit. The summit moorland is boggy in places but the views more than compensate on a clear day.

🎯 Bonus Birketts within 3 km

These Birkett tops are not Wainwright summits — detour to them on this walk and they are pure profit. Distances are straight-line; allow extra for terrain.
