About the walk

Key information

Knott

Knott at 710m (2,329ft) is the highest point of the Back o' Skiddaw plateau — a vast, remote moorland above Caldbeck and the Vale of Eden that Wainwright described as the loneliest corner of Lakeland. The summit gives wide views north to Scotland and east to the Pennines. The approach from Caldbeck is across open moorland — a completely different experience from the tourist paths to Skiddaw. The combination with Great Calva and other Back o' Skiddaw fells makes for an excellent day's walking in this quiet, undervisited corner.

Navigating Knott in cloud

Care needed

A broad, gently-sloping top with little to steer by — easy to lose your bearings and hard to relocate in mist. Take care in poor visibility — carry map and compass, and know how to use them.

In winter — snow, whiteout, cornices, buried features — every top demands full winter navigation skills whatever its band, and a broad, gentle summit can be the worst place of all. See walking in bad weather and the navigation guide.
