Longlands Fell at 483m (1,585ft) is the lowest of the five Wainwrights on our North of Skiddaw round, a pleasant summit above the hamlet of Longlands giving views across the northern moorlands. Wainwright included it in his Northern Fells guide.

Is Longlands Fell an easy walk?
It is one of the gentler Wainwrights — a low grassy swell at the northern edge of the Skiddaw group, reached by a clear path with a modest climb. It is not all smooth: our quiet Birkett round crosses faint-trodden heather and grass on the Longlands and Lowthwaite section, and comes off the top to the west-north-west on a descent of about 35%. On a clear day, the climb from Longlands makes a good first fell.
Our quiet Birkett round takes it in over 13.0 km with 587 m of ascent; the north of Skiddaw round is 13.2 km and 729 m with navigation graded easy. On its own from Longlands, where our North of Skiddaw round starts, the top is 2.2 km and 259 m of climbing: about 50 to 70 minutes at our pacing.

The nearest bus stop we hold is the 554 at Castle Inn (stop 3), 5.3 km of walking from the start — no bus route we hold serves it.
If you need to get off (the leg from the start): Turn around and descend the grassy slopes directly back to the Cumbria Way track.

Of the three things our terrain model measures, the highest reading here is the amount of near-level ground around the summit. This top is in the lowest of the index’s four bands, and a low band never means “safe”: carry map and compass and know how to use them.
In winter — snow, whiteout, cornices, buried features — every top demands full winter navigation skills whatever its band, and a broad, gentle summit can be the worst place of all. See walking in bad weather and the navigation guide.

Before you call, have ready: where you are (a grid reference if you can – the OS Locate app shows yours on your phone), what has happened, how many of you there are, and your mobile number.
Then stay where you are until the rescue team contacts you.

Warnings: The Longlands and Lowthwaite section is faint-trod heather and grass — about a third of the route follows drawn lines where no clear track exists. Bearings country in poor visibility.

Longlands Fell waits for the sun. Its longest wait of the modelled year falls at midwinter, when the sun is up for 46 minutes before it clears this skyline — first light 09:20 against an almanac sunrise of 08:34. You are standing in shadow while the valley below is already lit. The sun comes up to the south-east from here (141.5°), and the skyline on that bearing stands at 4.18°.

Longlands Fell holds the light. On not one of the sixteen dates modelled does the sun leave this summit before almanac sunset — the ground falls away westward rather than standing over you, and at midsummer it is still in the sun 3 minutes after the valley has lost it.

How the skyline, light and sightlines are computed
Computed, not photographed. First light is the first minute the sun’s upper limb clears this summit’s own skyline and last light the last minute it is still clear of it, both solved against the 360° horizon profile behind The View from Longlands Fell. Almanac sunrise and sunset are the flat-horizon convention. Every time carries a ± band from the 30 m elevation model — it smooths arêtes and cornices, so nothing here claims better than five minutes.
Sightlines from the Copernicus GLO-30 elevation model, which is a surface model: each 30 m cell holds the top of whatever stands there, trees and buildings included, rather than bare ground. Corrected for the Earth’s curvature and average atmospheric refraction. “Distant” sightlines and any over 100 km depend on exceptionally clear air.
