Arthur's Pike at 533m (1,749ft) is a grassy summit above Ullswater's western shore, giving fine views of the lake from its open top. Wainwright described it as a pleasant short walk from Pooley Bridge with rewarding lake views. Most naturally combined with Bonscale Pike as a short circuit above Ullswater. The views east across the lake to the distant Pennines are a distinctive bonus from this northern end of the Far Eastern Fells.

Getting to Arthur's Pike by bus

The 508 stops at Pooley Bridge Inn (at), 80 m from the start of Heughscar Hill & Arthur's Pike. The last bus is 19:20 towards Windermere (508) and 18:36 towards Troutbeck (UB1) and 16:32 towards Aira Force (UB2), every day. Checked against the operator’s timetable, 7 September 2026. Times here are a guide, not a promise — leave yourself more than the minute.

Hazards on Arthur's Pike

Hazard & Incident Information for Arthur's Pike

Hazard: Moderate

A fell on the eastern shore of Ullswater above Howtown, whose grassy, flat-topped summit hides an extensive craggy face dropping in tiers to the lower lake. To the west the ground falls steeply to Swarthbeck Gill, and the direct approach from Howtown is steep and rough with some scrambling over loose ground. Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team covers this ground.

  • The craggy north-west face above Ullswater: Below the flat summit, tiers of crag drop steeply toward the lake. The grassy top is set back, so keep well clear of the edge — don't approach the lip for the view, especially in wind or cloud.
  • Steep Swarthbeck Gill flank & rough approach: The west side falls steeply to Swarthbeck Gill, and the direct approach from Howtown is steep and very rough, with some scrambling over loose ground and no single clear path. Take care with footing; avoid the steepest, looser lines if unsure.
  • Boggy ground & navigation: Paths can be boggy and indistinct on the broad moorland top (toward Loadpot Hill), easy to misjudge in mist. Wear proper footwear and navigate by compass in cloud, keeping back from the western crags.
Who should attempt this fell: Arthur's Pike looks gentle on top but is undercut by crags above Ullswater — keep well back from the north-west edge, and take the steep, rough, loose approach from Howtown carefully. Navigate the broad boggy top by compass in cloud, wear sturdy footwear, and treat the edges as serious in winter.

Navigating Arthur's Pike in cloud

Severe

A broad, gently-sloping top with little to steer by — easy to lose your bearings and hard to relocate in mist. A serious place to be caught in cloud: carry map and compass (or GPS) and know how to use them, or save it for a clear day.

In winter — snow, whiteout, cornices, buried features — every top demands full winter navigation skills whatever its band, and a broad, gentle summit can be the worst place of all. See walking in bad weather and the navigation guide.

✎️ Come by boat if you can. Howtown has almost nowhere to park and the eastern-shore lane is long and narrow, but the Ullswater Steamer pier is a few minutes from this start — sail in, walk the round, sail back, and the car never comes down the lane at all. Take the outward sailing first and walk afterwards, so an unhurried day on the tops can’t turn into a missed last boat. Sailings are seasonal, so check the timetable before you build a day around it. (Checked 4 Aug 2026; we don’t publish times here because a stale one would be worse than none.)

⚠️ Warnings: Steep crag edges above Ullswater: Bonscale Tower and the western drops off Arthur's Pike and Bonscale Pike are serious — keep well back, especially in cloud or wind. Boggy, featureless plateau: the Loadpot Hill saddle is peat-hagged and wet, and the broad grassy tops give little to aim for in mist — a compass day if the cloud is down. Summer bracken + a washed-out descent: the Brock Crag short-cut and the steep drop off Bonscale to Mellguards can be thick, navigation-sapping bracken, with one eroded section underfoot — walking poles help. Easy-to-miss summits: Wether Hill and Loadpot Hill both have their true top just off the obvious path — step the few metres across to be sure you've actually bagged them.

💧 Treat water from the fell before you drink it. A mapped point is usually a tap or public supply, but never drink untreated from a beck, stream or tarn — even clear-looking hill water can carry giardia or cryptosporidium from livestock or a carcass upstream and leave you seriously ill. Run it through a filter or purifier (a LifeStraw, Sawyer Squeeze or HydraPak) or bring it to a rolling boil first.

The evening here runs close to the flat-horizon case. Even on its earliest evening of the modelled year (on 1 December) last light is only 14 minutes before almanac sunset, so the published sunset time is a fair guide on Arthur's Pike.

First light is the first minute the sun’s upper limb clears this summit’s own skyline and last light the last minute it is still clear of it, both solved against the 360° horizon profile behind The View from Arthur's Pike. Almanac sunrise and sunset are the flat-horizon convention. Every time carries a ± band from the 30 m elevation model — it smooths arêtes and cornices, so nothing here claims better than five minutes. These are daylight figures, not a descent plan: the light goes on fading for a good while after the sun leaves, and going down in it is a decision about your own ground and party, not about this table.

The most complete answer in the cluster and the one physically tied to these routes: it sleeps 7 in four bedrooms, has a cot, off-road parking, drying facilities, its own washing machine, is dog friendly, is single storey, and prepared meals can be had from the owners' hotel kitchen without getting back in the car. It also states its minimum stay, which nothing else at Howtown does.

The cottage stands right beside Fusedale Beck - the beck the Fusedale Circuit follows out of Howtown - and the steamer jetty is reachable on foot without a car.

Howtown Cottages self-catering

Four cottages 200 yards from the lake and under a kilometre from the start, every one of them dog friendly with parking, a cot and drying facilities. Cottage No4 is the one to ask for with a bad knee or a buggy: it puts a shower room AND a triple room on the ground floor, which nothing else at Howtown does.

There is no booking engine. You email David at the Howtown Hotel, and he confirms the cottage and the dates himself.

The only property in the whole 4.83 km radius with a drying room named for wet boots and outdoor gear, which is the single fact that matters most to a party coming off Heughscar Hill in the rain. It is also the only one pairing that with a dedicated laundry room, a dog shower and a toddler-through-older-child play area, so a walking family and a non-walking family are both answered by one row. Ranked above four closer properties on usefulness, per the selection rule; 0.78 km is still a walk into Pooley Bridge village.

The guest drying room is code-locked and you collect the code from Reception; the shower block was built with a dog wash built into it, and the on-site shop sells local sausages, eggs, bacon and bread.

Ullswater House (Hillcroft Park)

The nearest bed to the start at 100 m, and the answer for a large party: 14 people across six en-suite bedrooms, one of them a designated family room, with cots and high chairs available to hire and parking for several cars in the grounds - the group problem that no cottage or B&B in this cluster solves. Two bedrooms are on the ground floor, which matters after a long day. Is Arthur’s Pike a hard walk?

It depends entirely on which way you go, and the difference is large. From Pooley Bridge over Heughscar Hill it is an easy day on open moorland: 11.7 km with 436 m of ascent, graded easy for exposure and moderate for steepness.

Straight up from Howtown is a different walk — steep, very rough, with some scrambling over loose ground and no single clear path. And the flat grassy summit is set back above tiers of crag falling to Ullswater, with the ground dropping steeply to Swarthbeck Gill on the western side. Enjoy the view from back off the lip, not from the edge of it. The Fusedale round takes it in over 14.7 km and 856 m.
