📖 Key Information

Helvellyn at 950m (3,117ft) is the most climbed of all the major Lakeland summits, and Wainwright devoted more pages to it than almost any other fell. The great eastern corries — Red Tarn flanked by Striding Edge and Swirral Edge — create scenery that rivals anything in the district: two knife-edge ridges converging on a broad, windswept summit plateau with views extending to the Pennines and the Scottish hills on a clear day. The traverse of both edges is the classic Lakeland mountain day, involving genuine scrambling and sustained high-level walking. Approaches from Glenridding, Patterdale and Thirlspot are all excellent.

🗒️ My notes
I climbed this one in the middle of July 2023. Those not used to the weather in the Lakes may think it'd be lovely sunny day, or at least mildly cloudy. But as I started my assent from Brown Crag to White Side the weather got decidedly worse. About 50m short of the Helvellyn summit I was walking at 45 degrees into the wind and had trouble standing up. I saw a guy cowering behind the trig point and he seemed just as cheesed off as me. Have a read of the Dolywagon page to find how it got worse.

🎯 Bonus Birketts within 3 km

These Birkett tops are not Wainwright summits — detour to them on this walk and they are pure profit. Distances are straight-line; allow extra for terrain.
