Grange Fell at 415m (1,362ft) is a rough, rocky summit above the village of Grange in Borrowdale, its craggy knolls and heathery terraces giving a charming, varied walk. Wainwright described King's How, its summit tor, as a wonderful viewpoint above the Jaws of Borrowdale — one of the finest valley views in the district. The ascent from Grange is short and entertaining, with multiple rocky outcrops to explore. A perfect half-day outing for visitors staying in Borrowdale.

The 77 stops at Rosthwaite General Store (near), 180 m from the start of Castle Crag, Brund Fell & Great Crag. The last bus is 20:05 towards Keswick (78), every day. Seatoller House B&B guest house

about 1.6 km from the start, in a straight line

Two named family rooms (Rabbit and Stag), both large with a private bathroom opposite, plus a dog policy precise enough to plan around — dogs in, but never in the dining room and dried off at the back door. The catch is timing: breakfast runs 8.00–8.30 only, which is late for a long Ullscarf day, and dinner is a single 7pm sitting that must be pre-booked 48 hours ahead if you did not book direct. It also shuts for the winter.

Worth knowing: “Well behaved dogs are allowed, they are not allowed in the dining room at any time,Please clean and dry all dogs on entering Seatoller via the back door.”

The house is 400 years old, has taken guests for more than a century, and is the largest building in the hamlet of Seatoller; every bedroom is named for a local animal — Badger, Eagle, Osprey, Otter, Owl, Rabbit, Squirrel, Stag, Hedgehog and the Bakehouse annexe.

Is Grange Fell an easy walk?

Short and easy in the climbing, with one caveat: the top is a maze. Grange Fell above Borrowdale is a tangle of rocky knolls, bracken and small crags, and the true summit at Brund Crag is not the obvious one. Route-finding among the outcrops is most of the work.

Our round with Castle Crag and Great Crag is 14.1 km with 795 m of ascent. It is a lovely low-level day for a poor forecast, and the view from the top over Borrowdale is one of the best in the valley for the effort.
