Hazard & Incident Information for Calf Crag
A rough knot of rock at the head of Far Easedale and Greenburn above Grasmere, on the boggy ridge linking Steel Fell to Helm Crag. There are no big cliffs, but the ground is very boggy and knolly with faint, weaving paths, and the descents are steep, rough and at times pathless. In cloud it's a genuinely confusing place — navigation is the main hazard. Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team covers this ground.
- Boggy, knolly ridge & navigation: The ridge to Gibson Knott and Steel Fell is very boggy with unclear paths weaving among many small knolls. On a clear day it's straightforward; in mist it's a different proposition — accurate map-and-compass work is needed and many diversions are required to dodge the worst peat.
- Steep, rough, sometimes pathless descents: The ways down (e.g. from Calf Crag and Tarn Crag) are steep, rough, boggy and at times pathless — take great care with footing and route-finding over the tricky ground, especially in poor visibility.
- Exposure & winter: Open, shelterless ground that holds bog and snow; in winter the navigation is harder and the wet ground ices. Carry full kit and a compass.

Navigating Calf Crag in cloud
Serious in cloudA broad, gently-sloping top with little to steer by — easy to lose your bearings and hard to relocate in mist. A serious place to be caught in cloud: carry map and compass (or GPS) and know how to use them, or save it for a clear day.
