Helvellyn Lower Man

Lower Man at 925m (3,035ft) is the north-western shoulder of Helvellyn, a broad, stony top on the main ridge between Helvellyn and White Side. Wainwright included it as a separate fell, noting its position gives a slightly different perspective on the eastern crags than the main summit — the views down to Red Tarn and along Swirral Edge are particularly fine from here. Most walkers pass through it automatically on the Helvellyn-White Side-Raise ridge traverse. The summit is unmarked save for a small cairn on the highest point of the broad plateau ridge.

Field notes

This is a summit that I wish I could remember more of. The only thing that comes to my mind is the absolute focus of trying to stay on my feet in heavy wind and rain. There's nothing I could see or feel other than the overwhelming desire not to be blown into Brown Cove. Lower Man is only 25 metres below the summit of Helvellyn proper and over the distance you need to travel it appears to be a gentle incline. This is definitely one I need to do again but in clear weather.

The straightforward way up England’s third-highest fell — no scrambling, no knife edges, just a long, honest climb from Thirlmere up Browncove Crags to the summit plateau, returning over Lower Man and White Side. This is the route to take if Striding Edge frightens you, and there is no shame whatever in taking it: the view from the top is exactly the same.

The nearest car park we hold is Wythburn Church, Thirlmere (paid), about 2.3 km from the summit in a straight line. The next is Swirls, Thirlmere (paid), 2.4 km out. We only look within 2.5 km, measured straight-line: over longer distances a road may cross a pass and the drive bears no relation to the line.

✎️ Be aware there is no good bail-out on this one. If the weather turns, your realistic option is to turn round and go back the way you came. If you have summited Helvellyn and are heading on for White Side but have had enough, simply return to the car and leave White Side for another day. If you are already on White Side and need to get down quickly, keep losing height on the descent towards Brown Crag rather than inventing a line of your own.

Best season: All year for competent walkers, but this is a serious mountain. In winter the summit plateau holds snow and ice long after the valley is clear, and the eastern edge becomes a cornice — that is an ice-axe-and-crampons day, not a walk.

⚠️ Warnings: The summit plateau is the danger, not the climb. It is broad, featureless and ringed by crags on its eastern side. In cloud, people walk off the edge. Know your bearing off the top before you get there, and count your paces. A steep, sustained pull up Browncove Crags — around 830 m of ascent in under 5 km. Pace it. It is a mountain, however gentle the path: carry map, compass, warm layers and food, and check the mountain forecast, not the valley one. Helvellyn is one of the busiest fells in England. Underfoot the path is worn and stony — most injuries here are simple slips on the descent.

The nearest documented bed to the Swirls start at 0.70 km, and the only property in the cluster that publishes a room-by-room breakdown of what each family room actually sleeps - so a family can pick the room before it phones. Four of its sixteen rooms take a family, and two of those four are on the ground floor.

A 16th-century hall standing on its own on the Thirlmere shore, inside ground designated as a red squirrel reserve, with Helvellyn - the fell you are here to climb - rising directly behind it. It publishes its front door as a what3words address, CRACKS.DIAMOND.RESPECTED.

Fornside Farm Cottages guest house

The only property in the cluster that solves a party of six AND an electric car in the same booking. Its four cottages sleep 4, 4, 6 and 6, each number published against a named cottage, and two of the four take up to two dogs - so a family of five with a dog knows exactly which door to knock on before it enquires.

A 17th-century Lakeland hill farm whose four cottages are barns adjoining a grade II listed farmhouse, heated by a ground source heat pump part-powered by solar panels, with a PodPoint car charger reserved for guests and a private farm trail through the farm's own woods and streams.
