📖 Key Information

High Street at 828m (2,717ft) takes its name from the Roman road that ran along its broad summit ridge — an ancient highway traversed by legions and drovers alike for 2,000 years. Wainwright devoted considerable attention to this historic aspect, noting that the flat summit plateau feels uniquely civilised for a Lakeland mountain. The views west across Haweswater to the Scafell group and east to the distant Pennines are superb. The classic approaches via the Nan Bield or Riggindale ridges from Mardale Head are both excellent, with the latter offering dramatic views of England's only breeding golden eagles.
