Hell Gill Pike at 662m (2,172ft) is a Birkett top on the high fell above the upper Wrynose valley, its rocky summit giving views across the head of Dunnerdale and towards the Crinkle Crags ridge.

The 516 stops at Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. From there it is 4.8 km and 603 m of ascent to the start of Black Sails & Great How — a route we rate Hard overall (hardest: steepness and navigation) — a walk in before the walk. Hazards on Hell Gill Pike
Notes from a planned route, not walked: Black Sails & Great How
- A steep, stony scramble of a ridge linking Swirl How to Swirl Hawse and Wetherlam. Awkward and tiring, especially descending, and parties are often caught out here at dusk. Allow plenty of daylight, take the rock carefully, and do not underestimate it as 'just a path'.
If you need to get off (the leg from Wrynose Pass Car Park): Turn 180 degrees and carefully downclimb the rocky path of Wet Side Edge straight back to the car park at Wrynose Pass.
