Terrain & access: the Lake District’s quieter fells
Finish the Wainwrights and you’ve barely started. These are 145 of Lakeland’s quieter tops — and not one is a Wainwright: the Birkett, Synge and Outlying fells the guidebooks pass over, where the honest question is simply how you get up each one. On 31 there’s no mapped path to the summit at all; on another 83 the path stops short and you finish across open ground; the last 31 have a path but something to weigh — steep ground, or an approach that leaves open‑access land. Every one is here, worked out from the shape of the ground and the map — computed, not walked.

Where the access map runs out
Of the 143 fells on this page whose approach we have classified, 116 have a summit inside mapped CRoW open‑access land. 27 do not — and they are not a random 27. They are markedly lower than the rest (53–446 m, median 289 m, against a median of 420 m across the classified set), and they cluster: 10 in South Lakeland, 5 in the Eastern fells, 5 in Northern Outliers.
That is a finding about the map, not about the fells. The CRoW layer records statutory open access. It does not record permissive access — the arrangements landowners make voluntarily — so a summit can sit outside the layer and still be somewhere walkers are welcomed. Four of these tops stand above Thirlmere, a working reservoir managed by United Utilities, whose car parks at Legburthwaite and Swirls are in our own parking data. A car park at the foot of a fell is not a legal opinion. It is not nothing, either.
So the page says what the data records and stops there: the summit lies outside mapped CRoW open‑access land. Not that there is no right of way to it, and certainly not that you would be trespassing. Where a fell here is crossed by one of our routes, the route carries the same wording — we would rather show the gap than paper over it.
Scope: every fell on this page is a Birkett, Synge or Outlying top. None is a Wainwright, so nothing here supports a claim about the 214 — that ground has not been surveyed this way.
Method & honesty. Terrain — path coverage, ascent and steepness — is computed from open elevation data; paths and barriers are from OpenStreetMap (© contributors, ODbL); open‑access land is from Natural England’s CRoW layer (OGL). Every figure is modelled from the map and the shape of the ground — computed, not walked — and mapped features are never guaranteed complete: a “pathless” top may have a faint trod that isn’t on the map, and “check access” means the map records no open‑access right on the direct line, not that you would be trespassing. The CRoW layer records statutory open access only. It does not record permissive access — the arrangements landowners make voluntarily, and which cover a good deal of ground in the Lake District — so a summit outside it may still be somewhere walkers are welcome. Absence from the map is absence of a recorded right, not evidence of no right. We show what the data records; we are not a legal authority. As of 2026-07-10.
