Buses
The 508, 509, UB1 and UB2 stop at Matterdale, opposite Aira Force, a 240 m walk from the start of Birketts by Gowbarrow — a route we rate Hard overall (hardest: steepness and navigation). The UB1 and UB2 run until 1 November 2026, the last day of their season. The last bus is 18:02 towards Penrith (508) and 17:15 towards Martindale (UB1) and 15:15 towards Lowther (UB2), every day. Checked against the operator’s timetable, 7 September 2026; that timetable runs to 1 November 2026. Times here are a guide, not a promise — leave yourself more than the minute.

Hazards on Little Meldrum
Notes from the Birketts by Gowbarrow route
- Aira Force plunges some 65 ft through a steep, narrow gorge with sheer sides, slippery rock and stone steps, and few natural viewing points or barriers. It's a busy honeypot — keep children and dogs close, stay behind railings and back from wet edges, and don't clamber for a better view of the falls.
If you need to get off (the leg from Great Meldrum): If the bogs become impassable, turn back to Great Meldrum; no way down to the A5091 has been checked for this guide.

Water & shelter on the way up
On the Birketts by Gowbarrow route:
Treat water from the fell before you drink it. A mapped point is not proof the water is drinkable, so carry your own or use a supply you know is safe. Never drink untreated from a beck, stream or tarn — even clear-looking hill water can carry giardia or cryptosporidium from livestock upstream and leave you seriously ill. Use a treatment method suited to what might be in the water, and follow the device’s own instructions. Boiling and ordinary filters do not make water with dissolved metals or chemicals safe: where that is possible, choose another source.

Access on Little Meldrum
Access: the open datasets show no access land and no recorded right of way reaching this summit. That describes the mapping, not necessarily the ground — permissive arrangements often go unmapped — but we don’t publish approach detail for fells where we can’t point to a public right or a landowner’s invitation. How we worked out the access
Summit and approach positions are tested against Natural England’s CRoW Act 2000 access layer; rights of way and wall or fence detail come from OpenStreetMap. Both are open datasets with known gaps — in our own survey only 4 of 26 wall and fence crossings had a stile or gate mapped within 150 m — so absence of a mapped feature never means absence of a real one. Nothing here is field-verified unless marked, and none of it is legal advice. How we checked 377 fells.
