📖 Key Information

High Stile at 807m (2,648ft) is the highest of the three great Buttermere summits — High Stile, High Crag and Red Pike — a ridge that Wainwright described as offering one of the finest ridge walks in western Lakeland, with Buttermere and Crummock Water visible throughout. The summit gives outstanding views of Pillar, Great Gable and the Ennerdale fells to the south-east, and the dramatic drop to Bleaberry Tarn to the north. The classic ascent from Buttermere via Scarth Gap and High Crag is excellent, returning via Red Pike and Scale Force for a superb full day's circuit.

🎯 Bonus Birketts within 3 km

These Birkett tops are not Wainwright summits — detour to them on this walk and they are pure profit. Distances are straight-line; allow extra for terrain.
