High Stile at a glance

High Stile

High Stile is the highest of the three great fells of the Buttermere ridge, and one of the finest summits in the Western Fells. Its dramatic north-eastern face plunges in a wall of crag and combe — Bleaberry Comb and Burtness Comb — straight down to Buttermere and Crummock Water far below. The summit panorama is superb: the Buttermere valley at your feet, Pillar and Great Gable across Ennerdale, and the Scafells beyond. It is the high point of the classic Buttermere horseshoe with Red Pike and High Crag — a serious mountain day, usually begun from Buttermere village or Gatesgarth. It is rough and rocky near the top, with steep ground on the lake side, so keep well back from the edge in cloud.

Five tops along the High Stile ridge with Buttermere below you the whole way. 836 m of ascent in 13 km, and a stage averaging 20% to gain the ridge in the first place. Exposure is rated hard where the crags drop straight to the lake. Roughly 4 hours.

The Buttermere Ridge

One of the finest ridge walks in the Lakes — Seat, High Crag, High Stile and Red Pike strung above Buttermere, with plunging drops into Ennerdale on one side and the lake on the other. Earned by the loose, relentless grind of Gamlin End and paid for again on the red scree chute off Red Pike: 13.4 km, 975 m of climbing, and severe for steepness.

The nearest car park we hold is Buttermere village LDNP car park (east) (paid), about 2.2 km from the summit in a straight line. The next is High Snockrigg car park (free), 2.3 km out. We only look within 2.5 km, measured straight-line: over longer distances a road may cross a pass and the drive bears no relation to the line.

Getting to High Stile by bus

The 77 stops at Buttermere, outside Court Hotel, 100 m from the start of High Stile, Seat via Buttermere. Seasonal: the 77 does not run all year. 1 November 2026 is its last day, and it is not daily before then — a bus on 31 of the 56 days from 7 September. We don’t know when it returns. Confirmed with the operator, 29 August 2026. Last bus: Monday to Friday 19:23 towards Cockermouth (77A) and 18:20 towards Keswick (77); Saturday 19:23 towards Cockermouth (77A) and 18:20 towards Keswick (77); Sunday 18:20 towards Keswick (77). Hazards on High Stile

No hazard card for this fell. The usual open-fell rules apply: check the forecast, carry a map and compass, and turn back in cloud if the ground is not what you expected.

Navigating High Stile in cloud

Severe

A rough, rocky summit ringed by crags, with no single obvious way off in poor visibility. A serious place to be caught in cloud: carry map and compass (or GPS) and know how to use them, or save it for a clear day.

In winter — snow, whiteout, cornices, buried features — every top demands full winter navigation skills whatever its band, and a broad, gentle summit can be the worst place of all. See walking in bad weather and the navigation guide.

High Stile sits close to the flat-horizon case. Even on its longest wait of the modelled year (at the September equinox) first light is only 3 minutes after almanac sunrise, so the published sunrise time is a fair guide here.

Midsummer. The filled shape is the skyline as seen from the summit; the line is the sun’s path. Where they meet is first light — everything left of that point is the wait.

Last light — when the sun leaves High Stile

High Stile holds the light. On not one of the sixteen dates modelled does the sun leave this summit before almanac sunset — the ground falls away westward rather than standing over you, and at midsummer it is still in the sun 5 minutes after the valley has lost it.

First light is the first minute the sun’s upper limb clears this summit’s own skyline and last light the last minute it is still clear of it, both solved against the 360° horizon profile behind The View from High Stile. Almanac sunrise and sunset are the flat-horizon convention. Every time carries a ± band from the 30 m elevation model — it smooths arêtes and cornices, so nothing here claims better than five minutes. These are daylight figures, not a descent plan: the light goes on fading for a good while after the sun leaves, and going down in it is a decision about your own ground and party, not about this table.

It is 20 m from where all five Buttermere routes begin and it is the only hotel in the valley that says it takes dogs, in a cluster where three of the other four beds state a pet restriction. It also states its own size - "21 EN-SUITE BEDROOMS AND 6 SELF-CATERING APARTMENTS" - and its own food and ales, so a party coming off Red Pike at six can eat and sleep without moving the car. Set against that: only its home page is in the cache and that page answers nothing about parking, drying, children or family rooms, and it publishes no email and no phone at all, so this is a place you book online or ring on OSM's number, not one you email.

The bedrooms are deliberately unwired - no television, no radio, and no mobile signal to lose.

Frequently asked questions about High Stile

Is High Stile hard to climb?

Steep and rough, and the highest point of the Buttermere ridge — but there is nothing on the ordinary line that needs hands. What makes it a serious fell is the northern edge, which falls in crags and combes straight toward Buttermere and Bleaberry Tarn.

Our shorter round with Seat is 13.0 km with 836 m of ascent; the full ridge is 13.4 km and 975 m with navigation graded hard. The summit area is broad and stony, so in cloud the edge is closer than it feels.
