Rydal Water is a small lake with an outsized story. One of the smallest of the lakes — barely three-quarters of a mile long — it sits in the very heart of Wordsworth country, beneath the fells between Grasmere and Ambleside, and packs a lot into a small space: Wordsworth's last home at Rydal Mount, the daffodils of Dora's Field, the cavernous Rydal Cave, and the old Coffin Route path. Almost everyone walks it as the Rydal-and-Grasmere loop — and it's a lovely low-level walk.

The big walk — Rydal & Grasmere together
The dominant reason people come is the combined Rydal Water and Grasmere loop, and it earns its popularity. Linking both small lakes via Loughrigg Terrace and White Moss, it's a walk of roughly 4–5 miles with fine low-level views — the long look down Grasmere from Loughrigg Terrace is a classic. Rydal Cave
The lake's most-photographed spot isn't on the water at all: Rydal Cave is a vast, man-made slate-quarry cavern in the fellside above the southern shore, with a shallow pool guarded by stepping stones — the Instagram-famous picture. It's an easy detour on the Loughrigg side of the loop. The cave is open to wander into; the pool is shallow and the stones can be slippery, so mind your footing, especially with children.
Wordsworth — Rydal Mount, Dora's Field & the Coffin Route
Rydal was Wordsworth's home for the last 37 years of his life (Rydal Mount, 1813–1850); he called Rydal "the loveliest spot that man hath ever found." Just below is Dora's Field (National Trust) — the slope of wild daffodils he and his family planted in memory of his daughter Dora, who died in 1847; they're a glory in spring. The old Coffin Route between Rydal and Grasmere — the corpse road along which coffins were once carried to St Oswald's, complete with flat resting stones — makes a lovely, level high path with views over the lake. A few minutes further up the valley, Rydal Hall has its own waterfalls and The Grot — the little 17th-century stone viewing house built to frame the Lower Falls, one of the earliest deliberately-designed viewpoints in Britain.
Can you swim in Rydal Water?
Yes — Rydal is a popular wild-swimming spot, with easy entries along the shore. The honest caveat is the temperature: it's very cold year-round, shaded and fed by the fells, so treat it with respect — acclimatise, never swim alone, and get warm quickly afterwards. There are no lifeguards. It's beautiful, but cold-water care matters here as much as anywhere. It is individual swimming only: no canoes, kayaks, paddleboards or boats (National Park lakes guide).

For a bigger day, Loughrigg Fell rises straight above the southern shore (the Cave is on its flank), and the Nab Scar–Heron Pike ridge climbs steeply from Rydal onto the Fairfield horseshoe to the north. Without a car: The nearest stations as the crow flies are Windermere (9 km away) and Staveley (14 km away); the 555 and 599 stop at Rydal, at White Moss Common, 1.2 km from here in a straight line. The last bus from that stop, as timetabled from 27 October to 1 November: Towards Kendal (555): Tuesday to Saturday 23:07; Sunday 20:07 to Windermere, 19:37 to Kendal. Towards Bowness on Windermere (599): Tuesday to Sunday 19:20 to Bowness on Windermere, 17:30 to Bowness on Windermere Braithwaite Fold Car Park. Rydal Water is right on the A591 between Ambleside and Grasmere. You can also take the frequent 555 / 599 bus. From Ambleside it's a popular and easy walk in of a couple of miles via Rydal Road and the Coffin Route — no car needed.

Where to stay & practical
Tiny Rydal has a hotel or two; most people base in Ambleside or Grasmere a couple of miles either side, both with the full range and the A591 bus between them. Make a day of it: the Rydal + Grasmere loop, Rydal Cave, Dora's Field in daffodil season, and tea in Grasmere or Ambleside — gentle, beautiful, and steeped in Wordsworth.
