Grasmere lake vs Grasmere village

A quick disambiguation, because the searches blur the two. Grasmere village is the famous little town — Dove Cottage, the Wordsworth graves at St Oswald's, Sarah Nelson's gingerbread. Grasmere lake is the water just below it. They share a name and sit side by side, but this page sticks to the lake — the walk round, the boats, the swimming question — and links across to the village for everything else (much as Coniston village and Coniston Water are separate guides).

The walk round the lake

The lakeside path makes a gentle circuit of roughly a mile and a half, taking most people an hour to an hour and a half at a stroll — flat and easy, with lovely views to Helm Crag and Silver How. By far the most popular version, though, is the bigger Grasmere + Rydal Water loop via Loughrigg Terrace and White Moss, which strings both lakes together in a half-day with some of the best low-level views in the Lakes — see Rydal Water and our Grasmere lake circuit route for the detail.

Can you swim in Grasmere lake?

Here's the honest answer people don't always get: we'd be cautious. Grasmere has a recurring problem with blue-green algae, especially in warm, still spells, and the bay by Faeryland is not a spot we'd send you for a casual swim. If the water looks green, scummy or paint-like, stay out (it can be harmful to people and dogs). It's better thought of as a lake to walk round and row on than to swim in — and landing on the island, or on the shores from a boat, isn't permitted.

Boats & the island

You can hire a traditional rowing boat at Faeryland, the lakeside tea garden on the eastern shore — a lovely, slow way to spend an afternoon among the reflections. The lake's single wooded island is out of bounds (no landing), as are the shores from the water, so enjoy it from your boat rather than going ashore.

Wordsworth & the fells

This is the heart of Wordsworth's Lakeland — he lived just up the hill at Dove Cottage and is buried in the village churchyard, with Grasmere gingerbread made to a secret recipe next door. Those all belong to the village page; from the lake, the fells to aim for are Helm Crag (the "Lion and the Lamb"), Silver How and Loughrigg Fell, all modest, view-rich summits straight from the valley. Getting there & parking

Without a car: The nearest stations as the crow flies are Windermere (11 km away) and Staveley (16 km away); the 555 stops at Grasmere, at School, 0.5 km from here; the last bus back is 20:46 towards Keswick Bus Station (K) Monday to Friday (Saturday and Sunday differ), signed off against the operator’s timetable on 7 September. Grasmere is just off the A591 between Ambleside and Keswick. Park in the village car parks or at White Moss (between Grasmere and Rydal — handy for the two-lake loop, with toilets); they fill on fine days, so come early or arrive by the frequent 555 / 599 bus along the A591. From the village it's a few minutes' walk down to the lake.

Where to stay & practical

Stay in Grasmere village — hotels, inns, B&Bs and a couple of YHAs — or nearby in Ambleside and Rydal, with the wider valley easily reached on the A591 bus. Combine the lake with a wander round the village, the Rydal Water loop, and a gentle fell like Loughrigg for a perfect easy day. On ownership: boat hire is run by Faeryland, and we'd rather leave the lake's ownership unstated than repeat a claim we can't stand behind.
