Smithy Fell
Smithy Fell at 392m (1,286ft) is a Birkett top in the low fells north of Loweswater, 0.5 km south of Fellbarrow. Our Around Loweswater and Around Loweswater to Fellbarrow and Low Fell routes both cross its summit.

Buses
The 77 stops at Lanthwaite Green Farm (opposite). From there it is 3.2 km and 118 m of ascent to the start of Around Loweswater — a route we rate Severe overall (hardest: steepness) — a walk in before the walk. And the same back: about 25.6 km in all, with the walk. Seasonal: the 77 does not run all year. 1 November 2026 is its last day. It returns on 22 March 2027. If you need to get off (the leg from Darling Fell): No way down from here has been checked for this guide; if the weather turns, retrace the route by the ford on Crabtree Beck and the dip below Low Fell's summit.

A planned line, drawn from the map; not yet walked. Its heights come from a terrain model, not a GPS recording, because the drawn line carried none. It shares the ridge from Low Fell to Fellbarrow with our walk round Loweswater to Fellbarrow and Low Fell, but starts on the north side of the lake and adds Darling Fell, Low Fell’s south top and Hatteringill Head.

Access on Smithy Fell
Access: summit and direct approach lie within mapped open-access land (CRoW). The usual access-land conditions apply.
Walls & fences: the approach crosses a fence. At the crossing a mapped stile stands about 121 m to the N of the direct line.
Local restrictions can close open-access areas temporarily — check the official open-access information (opens in new tab) before travelling.
How we worked out the access
Summit and approach positions are tested against Natural England’s CRoW Act 2000 access layer; rights of way and wall or fence detail come from OpenStreetMap. Both are open datasets with known gaps — in our own survey only 4 of 26 wall and fence crossings had a stile or gate mapped within 150 m — so absence of a mapped feature never means absence of a real one. Nothing here is field-verified unless marked, and none of it is legal advice. How we checked 377 fells.
