Notes from a planned route, not walked: West of Wet Sleddale - Birketts
- Classic Shap-fells going: faint trods, tussock and peat with long pathless stretches. The straight sections of the plotted line are bearings, not paths — carry map and compass and expect to weave.
If you need to get off (the leg from Harper Hills): Retreat: The map shows the walk's own way down to Swindale Lane passing close to the line at about 15 km, short of Scalebarrow Knott: from there a track and then a public bridleway lead about 0.9 km east-south-east to the lane, where the walk reaches it at about 16.7 km, missing the top. Before that, the way off is on to that point, never more than about 2 km; not walked for this guide.
