The fells of the Lake District

Ordnance Survey will tell you where every one of these is, and better than we can. What it will not tell you is which list a top belongs to — and that is the question a Lakeland walker actually has. There are 544 tops on this map. 214 of them are Wainwrights, the round almost everyone is walking. The other 330 are the ones nobody mentions.

Height bands rather than a colour gradient, deliberately. A continuous scale looks better and reads worse: nobody can turn a shade back into a number, so it becomes decoration. Four bands can be counted — and the counts are in the legend.

Why the outline matters more than the colour

The Wainwrights are a chosen selection, not the highest 214 tops — Alfred Wainwright picked them for a walker’s reasons across seven books between 1955 and 1966, and several obvious summits are missing while several modest ones are in. The Birketts take in everything over 1,000 ft in the National Park, which is why there are 544 dots here and only 214 outlines.

What we don’t claim

This is not a navigation map. It has no paths, no contours and no grid. Take OS OL4–OL7 and a compass onto the hill; this is for planning before you leave.
A dot is a summit, not a route. Nothing here says how you would get up it, or whether you should.
Heights are from our own dataset and are rounded to the metre.
