Lake District parking map — what it costs, and if it's full
Field-checked. Every entry here has been checked against a source, but a car park can close, start charging or fill in ways no dataset sees. Wrong or out of date? Report it and we will fix it. The map shows every place a Lake District walker might use, including the car parks of Kendal, Cockermouth and the coast; 4 places far outside the district, in the North Pennines, are held in the dataset and not shown here.

This is every place we know of to leave a car for a walk in the Lake District — 1009 of them, from National Trust car parks with a machine at the gate to a gap in a wall on a single-track road. It is the same data behind the parking panel on every fell and route page, gathered in one place so you can see what your options actually are before you set off.
Vehicles are left entirely at their owner’s risk. We list places people park; we cannot vouch for any of them. Judge it on the day: take valuables with you, leave nothing on show, and if a spot feels wrong when you get there, park somewhere else.

The interactive map needs JavaScript. Every place is listed below with directions, grouped by who runs it.
Positions are approximate — good enough to find the spot, not a substitute for looking. Zoom in before you rely on one.
On charges
We record whether a place charges and who runs it, and never the tariff. Prices change, and a stale price is worse than no price — it is the same rule we apply to steamer fares. 642 of the 1009 entries have a charging status we can stand behind; 367 do not, and those say so rather than guessing. Check the sign when you arrive.
When it’s full
28 entries carry a fallback chain — the nearest alternatives and how far away they are — measured on the walking network rather than as the crow flies. They appear under “If it’s full” in the list below. It is the field we are proudest of and the one nothing else on the site surfaces.
Every place, by who runs it
121 entries name an operator; the rest are lay-bys, verges and small car parks with no published owner. 348 carry a space count, 39 list nearby toilets, cafes or pubs, and 199 are served by a bus route.
