Getting here Parking: Walna Scar Road, Coniston (paid, rough track), 0.0 km from the start (straight line). Bus: the 505 stops at Coniston, outside The Ruskin Centre; from there it is 1.8 km and 179 m of ascent to this start. And the same back: about 15.4 km in all, with the walk. Parking & buses ↓
Hardest part Hard steepness: Steepest sustained climb about 27% around the 3.7 km mark. Hard navigation: Care needed in cloud — 31 path junctions near the line. Hard – estimated from the map, not checked on the ground Hands for a few steps: the last steps to Dow Crag from Goat's Hawse (km 4.6–5.2).
Before you choose
- The top of Dow Crag is at the edge of its crag: OpenStreetMap maps the cliff 3 m from the line at the top, and the heads of the east face's gullies, among them Easy Gully and Great Gully, 40-60 m from it. Keep back from the edge, and do not use a gully as a way up or down.
- About 3.2 km of the line follows paths that OpenStreetMap does not record as public rights of way: the out-and-back from the Walna Scar Road over Walna Scar to White Maiden (about 6.5 to 8.4 km), the last few hundred metres to the top of Dow Crag, and short paths beside the Walna Scar Road. The rest is public footpath and the Walna Scar Road, a restricted byway. That is a map-data note, not a ruling on access: check the access land and rights of way maps before relying on this stretch.

Planning detail
How each grade on this page is set, and the timings stage by stage.
Difficulty profile
Hard overall — hardest: Steepness and navigation (estimated from the map, not checked on the ground); terrain not assessed; exposure not assessed on the ground
Five independent axes, not one score. None of them was set on the ground: they are computed from the recorded track and the map, which measures the line rather than surveying the ground.
How we grade: each axis is Easy, Moderate, Hard or Severe, and a route between two bands takes the higher one. Length: under 8 km, 8–14 km, 14–20 km, over 20 km. Steepness, the steepest 500 m of the track: under 15%, 15–25%, 25–35%, over 35%. Terrain, navigation and exposure are judged rather than measured, and each note says why. How we grade.
Pacing
| Summit | Cumulative | Ascent | Time (fast–steady) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1Dow Crag | 4.7 km | 537 m | 1:51–2:27 |
| 2Buck Pike - Seathwaite Fell | 5.4 km | 543 m | 2:00–2:39 |
| 3Brown Pike | 6.2 km | 554 m | 2:09–2:52 |
| 4Walna Scar | 6.7 km | 568 m | 2:17–3:02 |
| 5White Maiden | 7.5 km | 584 m | 2:28–3:17 |
| Finish | 11.9 km | 630 m | 3:26–4:33 |
A fast–steady range from Naismith’s rule, deliberately on the slow side. Breaks, weather, rough ground and the slowest person in your party all add to it. How we time walks.
Access & barriers
Can a buggy or dodgy knees manage this route?
- Buggy: No mapped stiles, but the ground underfoot has not been assessed; not a buggy line on what we know.
- Knees: A sustained ~23% descent over 250 m around the 8.7 km mark — a little jarring on tired knees.
On the line: No barriers mapped on this line.
Barriers as mapped on OpenStreetMap, which can miss some. Spotted one? Tell us (opens in new tab). Barrier data as of 2026-10-17. Access data © OpenStreetMap contributors (via Overpass).
