High Light Haw at a glance

High Light Haw

High Light Haw (263 m / 863 ft) is the higher of a low twin pair of heather-and-birch knolls in the gentle wooded country between Tarn Hows, Hawkshead and Arnsbarrow Hill. It stands just 0.4 km from its companion Low Light Haw, and the two are easily bagged together on a short walk out from Tarn Hows. The name combines light (an open clearing) and haw (Old Norse haugr, a hill or mound). A Wainwright Outlying Fell — a modest, peaceful top, all the more pleasant for its setting among the tarns and woods.

Getting there

🅿️ Crab Haws car park, Bethecar Moor (free)
Small, free car park about 0.8 miles N of High Nibthwaite (OS SD 296 909; what3words ///fault.swordfish.insect). The hidden entrance is immediately after a field on the right. The natural start for the quiet Bethecar Moor / Blawith Birketts (Low & High Light Haw, Arnsbarrow Hill), with a path up through the woods. High Nibthwaite's own roadside laybys are very limited, so use Crab Haws to avoid blocking farm access.
🅿️ Brown Howe (SLDC, paid)
Nearest fells: Beacon Fell (1.3 km), High Light Haw (1.4 km), Unnamed top (Top o' Selside) (1.5 km). Fees: pay and display; coins and cards. Toilets on site.

The short answers

Is High Light Haw a Wainwright?

High Light Haw is one of Wainwright's Outlying Fells, not one of the 214 in the Pictorial Guides.

Where do you park for High Light Haw?

The nearest car park we hold is Crab Haws car park, Bethecar Moor (free), about 0.8 km from the summit in a straight line. The next is Brown Howe (SLDC, paid), 1.4 km out. We only look within 2.5 km, measured straight-line: over longer distances a road may cross a pass and the drive bears no relation to the line.
