Path closures right now

Before you go

12 closures and restrictions on paths and bridleways in the Lake District that a walker can meet on the ground, each with its dates, its reason and the order that made it. Read from the National Park Authority's notices on 16 September 2026; this page was built on 17 September 2026. It is a list a person keeps, not a live feed, so the source is linked on every row for the day it matters.

Newlands Beck: footpath 201023 south of Little Braithwaite is closed

Closed from 18 February 2020, until 30 June 2027. Above Derwent parish, along Newlands Beck south of Little Braithwaite

The section along the beck is closed; the river took the bank and the path in Storm Ciara.

Why: The river washed away the bank and the footpath during Storm Ciara.

Bannerdale: part of footpath 348013 along Bannerdale Beck is closed

Closed from 12 July 2025, until 17 January 2027. Mungrisdale parish, between Bannerdale Beck and the junction with footpath 348012

The section between Bannerdale Beck and the footpath 348012 junction is closed.

Why: Riverbank erosion and landslips have left the path extremely narrow.

Rusland: footpath 511063 past St Paul's church tower is closed

Closed from 9 March 2026, until 23 April 2027. Colton parish, Rusland valley

The section past the church tower is closed.

Why: Masonry has fallen from the tower and the risk is ongoing.

West coast: paths under the power lines are closed in turn for the Cumbria Ring cable works

Closed from 1 April 2026, until further notice, expected January 2027. Bootle, Drigg and Carleton, Muncaster, Waberthwaite and Whicham parishes

Routes beneath or near the power lines close in turn as new cables are installed; some have reopened. Which are shut changes with the works.

Why: Electricity North West's Cumbria Ring project: new cables on the pylons.

Whinlatter: sections of bridleway 201006 and footpath 201044 are closed for forestry thinning

Closed from 11 May 2026, until further notice, for up to six months from 11 May 2026. Thornthwaite Forest and Beckstones Gill, above Thornthwaite

Sections are closed while thinning goes on. Signed part-routes open at times; the way round by Lord's Seat is long.

Why: Forestry thinning works.

Staveley: a section of footpath 561001 by the waste water treatment works is closed

Closed from 11 May 2026, until 11 November 2026. Over Staveley parish

The section between the order's points A and B is closed.

Why: Installation of a sewage pipeline and treatment works upgrades.

Oak Howe, Great Langdale: bridleway 543049 is open to walkers only

Closed from 18 June 2026, until 18 December 2026. Oak Howe, between Chapel Stile and Side House, Great Langdale

The bridleway is closed to horse riders, cyclists and mobility-equipment users while a bridge beam is sagging. Walkers may still use it.

Why: A bridge beam is sagging.

Kirkby Ireleth: footpath 539017 at Far Houses is closed

Closed from 18 June 2026, until 8 November 2026. Near the deserted farmstead at Far Houses

The section near the farmstead is closed while its built remains are repaired.

Why: Structural repair works to the built remains.

Huck's Bridge: bridleway 355041 from the A6 to Breast High Road is closed

Closed from 5 August 2026, until 3 September 2027. Orton parish, east of Shap

The bridleway between the A6 at Huck's Bridge and Breast High Road is closed.

Why: Landslips; the riverbank is still deteriorating.

Chapel Stile: footpath 543030 to Baysbrown campsite is closed below an unstable wall

Closed from 4 September 2026, until further notice. Chapel Stile, Great Langdale

Part of the footpath between Chapel Stile and Baysbrown campsite is closed. The Authority notes an alternative across the adjoining field.

Why: A retaining wall between the B5343 and the footpath could collapse.

Meathop: the Crag Cottage footbridge on footpath 582005 is closed

Closed from 14 September 2026, until 14 March 2027. Meathop and Ulpha parish, south of Grange-over-Sands

The footbridge over the main drain is closed. No alternative route is given.

Why: Cracked or failed steelwork and bulging concrete in the bridge.

Keswick to Threlkeld trail: the River Greta bridge is closed for replacement

Closed from 17 September 2026, until 12 November 2026. Keswick to Threlkeld railway path, between Keswick and the Threlkeld end

The bridge closes for replacement work. The trail east of it stays open to Threlkeld via the Penrith Road ramp; the section through the bridge does not.

Why: Bridge replacement works.

How this list is kept

Each row is typed from the order or notice it links to, with the dates as the Authority printed them. "Until further notice" is kept as those words and never times out on its own. A row whose end date has passed is marked lapsed rather than removed, because an order can be extended after its date and nobody here has read the source since; the row says when it was last read. Where a walk we publish starts within 2.5 km of a closure, it is listed as a prompt to read the notice before that walk, computed from the start point; it is not a claim that the walk is blocked, because the closure may be on a path the walk never uses.
