The name combines school (Old Norse skáli, a hut or shieling), and knott (Old Norse knútr, a rocky knoll). Its nearest tops are Grandsire (0.7 km E); nameless (School Knott) (0.8 km SE); Brant Fell (2.0 km SW) — usually taken in together. It rewards the list-ticker or anyone exploring this quieter corner of the District.
