Satellite SOS is real — and badly understood. What it can and can’t do for a UK hillwalker, honestly.

Can your phone really call for help from the fells?

“Your iPhone can call for help anywhere” is one of the most marketed — and most misunderstood — safety features on the fells. This is the honest version for UK hillwalkers: the two different satellite technologies people confuse, what your phone really does here (it’s emergency-only), why it’s weakest exactly where accidents happen, and why a plain 999 call is still your best lifeline.

Yes — a recent iPhone, Pixel or Galaxy can reach emergency services by satellite with no phone signal at all. But it only works with a clear view of open sky, which you often don’t have in the gullies, corries and crag-foots where fell accidents happen; it needs you conscious, with battery, holding and aiming the phone for minutes; and on a UK iPhone it’s emergency-only — you can’t casually text home. Treat it as a genuine last-ditch backup, not a plan. Your best lifeline is still an ordinary 999 call, which gets through on far less.

Chapter 1The two satellite systems everyone confuses

The single most useful thing to get straight, because the two have opposite requirements:

(a) “Aim-at-the-sky” satellite — on the phone you already own. Apple (via Globalstar), Google Pixel and Samsung use distant satellites you must point at. It works on hardware you already have, with no new SIM, but you must be outside, on open ground, holding the phone and aiming it as it guides you, for seconds to minutes. In the UK this is essentially an emergency tool — and it’s the “get out of trouble” one this page is really about (Apple (opens in new tab)).

(b) Direct-to-cell — a paid carrier service, brand new. O2 (with Starlink), and soon VodafoneThree (with AST SpaceMobile), beam a normal-looking signal from low satellites so an ordinary phone shows “bars” and can text or use some apps without aiming. It needs a specific handset and a paid plan, coverage is partial and very new, and it’s sold as a convenience and coverage filler, not a safety guarantee (Trusted Reviews (opens in new tab)). Don’t confuse “my network now does satellite texting” with “I’m safe on the tops.”

The honest headline: most walkers’ realistic satellite safety net today is Emergency SOS via satellite on an iPhone 14+, Pixel 9+ or Galaxy S24+ — an emergency channel, not a “text home from the summit” service. Not sure what yours does? Ask it:

Capability changes fast. This reflects the table above, dated on the page. Always check your own phone and network's current details, and treat satellite as a last-ditch backup — never a reason to go somewhere you otherwise wouldn't.

Chapter 3 · the honest coreWhat it can’t do — the limitations that matter on a fell

Chapter 4So what should you actually rely on?

Put satellite last in the chain, because the ordinary tools need far less:

  1. An ordinary 999/112 call is still your best lifeline. It can roam onto any operator’s network (“emergency calls only”), and modern phones fire AML on that call — automatically sending your location to the call handler, with no app, no aiming and no open sky. It works in a gully where satellite won’t (EENA (opens in new tab)).
  2. Can’t call but can text? emergencySMS. Texts get through on signal too weak for a call — but you must register in advance (text “register” to 999) (emergencySMS (opens in new tab)).
  3. The team may text you a link to pin your phone to within tens of metres — but that needs your own network’s data, which “emergency calls only” doesn’t give you. Good when it works; don’t depend on it.
  4. No signal of any kind? Now satellite SOS earns its place — if you have open sky, battery, and can aim.
  5. Underneath all of it, always: a downloaded offline map, a grid reference from OS Locate (works with zero signal), a paper map and compass you can use, and leaving word of your route. These never need a satellite.

Satellite is a real and welcome extra layer — but it sits beneath the plain 999 call, not above it, and far beneath map, compass and good decisions. When in doubt on the hill itself, that judgement is the subject of our bad-weather guide; and a downloaded GPX is not the same as a vetted route.

Chapter 5The five-minute car-park routine

Set up & test

  • Practise the satellite demo once at home (iPhone: Settings → Emergency SOS via satellite → Try Demo) so you're not learning to aim it in a crisis.
  • Register for emergencySMS — text the word register to 999, reply YES. Can't be done mid-emergency.
  • Know what your phone can do by satellite (use the chooser above) — and don't assume.

Power & navigation

  • Battery: carry the phone warm (inside pocket) — cold can kill it at an indicated 30–40%. Power bank + a cable you've tested.
  • Location services on; offline map downloaded for the area.
  • Leave word: tell a named person your route and expected return — and to dial 999 for Police, then Mountain Rescue, if you're overdue.

If it goes wrong: dial 999 or 112 → ask for Police → then Mountain Rescue, and stay put. No signal? Text 999 (if registered). No signal at all and open sky above you? Now your phone's satellite SOS earns its place.

Chapter 6Phone satellite vs a dedicated messenger: upgrade, or keep the inReach?

The question a lot of walkers are actually asking — so let’s answer it head-on. They aren’t really the same tool (Backpacker (opens in new tab); capability facts dated on the table above):

A modern phone (iPhone 14+ / Pixel 9+ / Galaxy S24+)

  • You already carry it, and it’s free (Apple: 2 years from activation, still not charging).
  • In the UK it’s emergency-only by satellite, text-only, and you must aim it at open sky.
  • It shares one battery with your map, camera and torch — when the phone dies, all of them die at once.
  • Works only in supported countries.

A dedicated messenger (Garmin inReach & similar)

  • Iridium network = genuinely global; built to survive (waterproof, shockproof) with battery in days, not hours.
  • Two-way messaging + live tracking — it can auto-share your route and position with home — and SOS to a 24/7 centre.
  • Costs a subscription (Garmin now keeps SOS active free on suspended plans, so you can pause between trips), and it’s another thing to carry and charge.

The honest verdict for a Lakeland day-walker: for a normal day on the fells, a recent phone’s Emergency SOS is a real, welcome backup — and with map, compass and a 999 call underneath it, probably enough for most people most of the time. The inReach’s edge isn’t that it does more on a sunny Helvellyn; it’s independence and endurance — a separate, rugged device with days of battery that still works when your phone (which is also your map) has died in your pocket, plus tracking so someone knows where you are without you doing anything. If you already own one, that redundancy is the reason to keep it; buying a new phone for the satellite feature alone is a weaker case than the marketing implies. Neither replaces knowing where you are.

Lee — my call

Honestly? I’m still not sure. What keeps me loyal to the inReach is the messaging to my key contacts — my wife and eldest son get my notifications without being charged per message — the live family tracking, and the “guide me back to the start” feature, which is reassurance you can’t improvise once the phone’s died in your pocket.

But I can see the pull of the iPhone: messaging the emergency services by satellite looks genuinely simple, and simplicity matters when things go wrong. So the move I’m actually leaning towards isn’t either/or — I’ll probably switch my Android for an iPhone just before the iPhone 18 lands, to catch a cheap deal on the outgoing model, and carry both for a while for the redundancy. Two independent ways to call for help, on two batteries, is exactly the belt-and-braces this whole page argues for.
