What winter actually does to a Lake District walk

What this page will not do

Some of what matters most in winter cannot be learned from a page, and we are not the people to teach it. Nobody here holds a Winter Mountain Leader award. So there is no ice-axe technique here, no self-arrest, no crampon fitting and no avalanche assessment — those are taught in person, on snow, by instructors assessed to teach them, and we point you at them rather than paraphrasing them badly.

What we can give you is the half nobody else has: what winter does to your particular walk.

1. The light

Everyone knows winter days are short. Almost nobody plans around how short, because the number that matters is not “sunset is at half three” — it is what time must I be walking by?, and that is a different answer for every route.

We have computed it for all 185 walks we publish, from the terrain itself.

The size of it

In June, every one of our 185 routes fits comfortably into the day. In December, 25 of them do not fit at all, and 49 more are tight.

The median walk has 8.8 hours of usable light in December against 19.1 in June. Not “less time”; less than half.

The median route’s latest safe start in December is 09:21. Not “an early start” in the abstract — that is the actual hour, and by it you are walking, not parking. For the longest routes that still fit it is 06:28, which in December is before the sun comes up.

The half nobody computes

Sunset is an almanac fact. The fells do not care about the almanac.

At the median route start the sun goes behind the surrounding fells 53 minutes before the almanac sunset; at the worst, 292 minutes. Across all 185 starts, the gap between “daylight” and “sun actually reaching you” runs to a median of 2.6 hours and a worst of 7.3.

The extreme case is a start at Borrowdale (B5289), 84 m up, which gets 0.02 hours of direct sun in mid-December. Call it a minute.

And here is the thing that matters, because it is the opposite of what that number sounds like. It is about the car park, not the walk. The valley is in shadow; you climb out of it into sun within the hour, and you can walk the whole route in perfectly good light. What it actually tells you is how the day feels: you start cold, in shade, on ground that has not been above freezing since yesterday afternoon — and you come back down into that same shadow earlier than the sunset time suggests.

We say this loudly because we got it wrong once ourselves, in the other direction. An early version of our daylight engine treated sun-on-the-terrain as the end of the day, and it called an April walk from Lanthwaite Green impossible when the walk is perfectly straightforward. Both figures were true. Only one of them was about whether you can walk.

So: almanac daylight decides whether the walk fits. Terrain sun decides how it feels. We publish both and we never confuse them.

Every route page carries its own December figure. The question to ask is not “how long is this walk” but “what time must I be walking by, and what happens if I am an hour late?” — because in December an hour late is a quarter of your remaining light.

2. What actually goes wrong — and it is not mostly the cold

We went looking for the number that would justify a frightening section about hypothermia. It is not there, and the page is better for its absence.

The commonest contributory factor is a decision. Weather comes third — and that category bundles rain, wind, snow, ice and heat together, so it is not a winter figure at all. Poor visibility, the thing a winter article would put at the top, is the smallest of the six.

For the Lake District specifically the evidence is thinner, and we will show you exactly how thin. One report of LDSAMRA’s 2024 figures — 32 deaths — describes them as mostly cardiac arrests, alongside paragliding accidents, head injuries, hypothermia and suicides, with no single underlying pattern claimed by the teams. That is a single news source, and our own dataset grades it medium confidence. It is not a statistic; it is a shape, and we are giving it to you as one. What it is not is a hypothermia count — there is no published Lakeland figure for that, so we are not going to invent one. Taken for what it is worth, it points the same way as the figures above: towards exertion rather than exposure.

So what is winter actually doing to you?

It is shrinking the margin around every decision you make. The same walk, in December: 8.8 hours of light instead of 19.1. The ground is slower. The consequences of a slip are higher, and the consequences of being an hour late are much higher, because an hour is now a quarter of what you have left rather than a twentieth.

None of that changes what a good decision looks like. It changes how much room you have to make a bad one — and that, not the cold itself, is what the numbers are describing. Which is why this page leads with the light.

The cold still matters — it just is not the headline

Rare is not the same as unimportant. Cardiac arrest being commoner does not make hypothermia survivable if it happens to you.

Hypothermia is a drop in body temperature below 35°C — normal is around 37°C. The signs the NHS (opens in new tab) lists are shivering; skin that is pale, cold and dry and may turn blue or grey; slurred speech; slow breathing; and tiredness or confusion. The last is the one that catches people, because the person it is happening to is the one least able to notice. If you think someone has hypothermia, call 999.

While you wait: get them into shelter, get the wet clothing off, wrap them up including the head, and stay with them. If they are fully awake, warm non-alcoholic drinks and sugary food. Keep them talking.

And three things not to do, quoted exactly rather than paraphrased, because every one is the opposite of what instinct suggests:

“do not use a hot bath, hot water bottle or heat lamp to warm them up”

“do not rub their arms, legs, feet or hands”

“do not give them alcohol to drink”

Rubbing a cold limb and running a hot bath are both the natural thing to reach for, and both are on the list. That is why they are here in the NHS’s words and not ours.

Two things the thermometer does not tell you

The first is wind. There is no single global definition of wind chill, but the UK figure is a real calculation rather than a feeling: the Joint Action Group for Temp Indices works out “how much heat is lost from a person’s bare face at a walking speed of 3mph”, and the Met Office’s “feels like” number takes “into account wind speeds and humidity to assess how the human body actually feels temperature”. Met Office (opens in new tab) On a Lakeland top the wind is usually the difference between a cold day and a serious one.

The second is wet, and it is the one a British winter turns on. “Protective clothing traps air, which acts as insulation, but the insulation is severely reduced if the clothing becomes saturated.” Mountaineering Scotland (opens in new tab) A soaked layer is not a thin layer; it is closer to no layer at all.

Which is why a mild climate is not automatically a safe one. Mountaineering Scotland puts it about their own hills, and we quote it as theirs rather than restating it as ours: “Scotland has a relatively mild climate but, because of the combination of wind and wet weather that frequently prevails in our high mountain areas, hypothermia is a significant hazard.” The Lake District is a wetter, windier, lower version of the same maritime problem. The temperature at which people get into trouble here is not the temperature people picture.

3. Snow and ice: the ground

The honest bit first: on avalanches, we cannot tell you

This is the part where most winter articles say something confident, and we are not going to.

There is no avalanche forecast for England. The Scottish Avalanche Information Service forecasts six Scottish areas from December to April, and that is the whole of Britain’s daily avalanche forecasting. MWIS (opens in new tab)’s own avalanche page carries only SAIS links, describing them as the best sources available “in Scotland”.

Then we went looking for how often avalanches actually happen in the Lake District, and we could not find an authoritative answer. Mountaineering Scotland (opens in new tab)’s material is explicitly about Scotland. The BMC’s Lakeland winter page does not discuss avalanches at all. What is left is forum accounts, which are not a source.

So here is everything we can honestly say:

  • Most large slab avalanches, anywhere, run on slopes between 25 and 45 degrees — which is not the steep ground people picture, but the angle a lot of Lakeland gully and coire ground actually sits at.
  • No forecast covers this country.
  • The absence of a forecast is not evidence of an absence of hazard. It means nobody is telling you, not that there is nothing to tell.

If that is unsatisfying, it is because the honest version is. We would rather leave you with a gap you know about than a number we made up.

How much snow, and how often — the region’s own numbers

This is the one place we can put a real figure on Lakeland winter, because the Met Office publishes regional climate statistics and the Lake District is named in them. Met Office, North West England & Isle of Man: climate (opens in new tab)

  • Snow falls rarely above 4 °C, and to lie for any length of time it normally has to be colder still.
  • Days with snow lying: over 30 a year in “upland areas such as the Pennines and Lake District”, against 3–7 on the Cumbrian coast an hour’s drive away.
  • Days with snow falling: about 20 in the lower-lying mainland, “as much as 50 days over the highest ground” — rising by roughly 5 days per 100 m of altitude.
  • Normally November to April, but the tops can see it in October and as late as May.
  • January is the snowiest month, then February.

The counting rule matters and travels with the number: a day of lying snow is one where “the ground is more than 50 % covered at 0900”. And the geography is the North West England region, not the summits alone — the fells are the upper end of that range, not its average.

The useful way to read this is as a gap between the car park and the top. The coast gets snow on about five days a year and the high fells on about fifty: the drive in tells you almost nothing about the ground you are going to walk on.

Where the ice will be, and why we are not going to tell you

The obvious next paragraph is the one about which slopes hold ice — north-facing, shaded, the polished bits of a worn path. We went looking for a source for it and could not find one. The BMC’s winter pages and Mountaineering Scotland’s ThinkWINTER both discuss aspect, but for climbing venues and snowpack stability, which is a different question from where a walker meets ice on a path.

We could have written it from experience and it would probably have been right. But this is the page where “probably right” is not the standard, and our own data does not cover it either — we hold terrain-horizon sun times, not slope aspect. So it stays unwritten, and this paragraph is here so you know it was a decision rather than an oversight.

What the temperature is actually doing up there

One genuinely Lakeland-specific resource exists and deserves to be better known. The BMC runs live temperature probes at two winter crags — Great End, and the Red Tarn face of Helvellyn — taking hourly readings relayed through base stations at Seathwaite and Glenridding. It comes with its own warning, and we quote it rather than paraphrase: “this is not a definitive system – it will not give a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to whether conditions are good for climbing.” It is there as “a guide for climbers to make their own, more informed decisions.”

Which is the right register, and the one this page is trying to hold. A number from a probe on one crag tells you about that probe. It is still a great deal better than guessing from a valley thermometer.

We already publish a clag index: all 214 Wainwrights scored for how hard they are to navigate when the cloud is down. It was built for any time of year, and winter is when it earns its keep — because winter is when the cloud sits lowest and the light goes soonest.

Snow does not just cover the ground; it removes the things you navigate by. The path, the wall line, the change from grass to scree, the beck you were following — under a covering they all read the same, and a bearing you would normally check against a feature has nothing to check against. That is not just our impression: “snow will blot out much of the detail in the landscape”, and the tracks that look like a substitute are not one, because “there may be a trail of footprints on the snow, but these can quickly disappear in heavy snow or wind.” Mountaineering Scotland (opens in new tab)

And the phone is the thing most likely to fail you here, in three ways at once: “batteries run down quicker when cold”, “the screen can also ice up or stop working due to the cold”, and “using your touch screen can be difficult or sometimes impossible with thick gloves on.” Mountaineering Scotland (opens in new tab) None of those is a flat battery you can plan around; they arrive together, in the weather that caused them.

The conclusion is theirs and we will not improve on it: “having a separate system to navigate with if the phone or GPS were to fail is a must, for example a map and compass” — along with the skill to use them.

Technique — how to navigate when that happens, and what to do with a compass in gloves — is taught properly by people qualified to teach it.

5. Gear and clothing

A standing rule for this section, and it is ours rather than anyone else’s: no product is named here that we would not name if no affiliate programme existed. This is the highest-intent page we publish and that is exactly why the rule is needed. So this section is about function and threshold, and there are no brands in it.

The axe

The clearest threshold we found is the BMC’s, and it is about consequence rather than conditions: “If you’re on terrain where a slip has nasty consequences then you should be using an axe.” BMC (opens in new tab) Not “when there is snow”. When a slip would not stop.

On crampons, the same source’s practical point is that they should go on sooner rather than later — before you have already lost traction, rather than while you are standing somewhere you would rather not be putting them on.

The rest of it, in the BMC’s words rather than ours

For a winter day on the high ground, their list is “gaiters, gloves, spare gloves, hat, headtorch, some sort of emergency shelter like a bivi or bothy bag”, and above that, “you’ll need the skills and equipment for snow and ice, principally ice axe and crampon use.” BMC (opens in new tab)

Note what that list does not carry: a temperature or a condition at which each item becomes necessary. Only the axe has a stated threshold, and it is the consequence one above. We are not going to invent the others, because a made-up threshold on this page would be worse than none.

The head torch, which is the one people get wrong

“Always remember to bring headtorches, even if you’re planning a short day out” is the BMC’s line, BMC (opens in new tab) and section 1 is the reason: 25 of our 185 routes do not fit into December daylight at all.

The part worth knowing is that the cold takes the torch as well. Petzl, on their own batteries: “standard batteries, like the CORE rechargeable battery, are sensitive to cold below 0° C”, and “between 0° and -20° C, burn time can be reduced by up to 50 %.” Petzl (opens in new tab) Their own fix is the simple one — “keep the lamp warm when not in use, for example in a pocket”. That is a manufacturer’s figure for their own kit rather than a standard, so treat it as the shape of the problem: plan the torch you carry in December against half its stated burn time, not all of it.

And the part that is our opinion, said plainly

Owning an axe is not the same as being able to use one, and a gear list that reads as a shopping list quietly implies otherwise.

We want to be careful about where that view comes from. The BMC’s own gear page covers selection and some technique and does not tell you that training is required — so when we say you should learn to use these things on a course, before you need them, that is our recommendation and not theirs. We think it is right. We are also not the ones qualified to teach it, which is rather the point: Mountain Training, Glenmore Lodge, Plas y Brenin and the BMC’s own courses all run winter skills days, and one of those is worth more than anything written here.

6. Before you go

The Met Office Mountain Forecast (opens in new tab) covers ten upland areas including the Lake District. It is published each afternoon before 6pm and updated early each morning before 6am.

The number on it that matters most in winter is the Freezing Level, which the Met Office defines as “the level above which snow is expected to settle or above which the ground is expected to be frozen.” That single line answers the question a valley forecast cannot: whether the rain falling on your car is snow on the top, and whether the ground you are about to walk on is frozen.

Reading a valley forecast for a summit

If all you have is the forecast for the village, the number to apply is the lapse rate: “the air temperature usually decreases as height is gained … It varies a lot, but is on average around 2°C of cooling per 300 metres of climb.” Met Office (opens in new tab) From Seathwaite to the top of Scafell Pike is close to 900 m, so about six degrees — which is the difference between rain and snow far more often than people expect.

Treat that as an average and not a promise: the Met Office says outright that it varies a lot, and the BMC’s weather page gives a steeper range again. Where two good sources disagree, the honest thing is to say so rather than pick the tidier number — and to read the mountain forecast, which does the calculation for you at 300 m intervals.

MWIS publishes mountain weather forecasts for UK upland areas, and separately signposts SAIS for avalanche conditions in Scotland. Read both if you have five minutes. They are produced differently and they sometimes disagree, and a disagreement between two good forecasts is itself information.

Turning around

We are not going to give you a rule, because the honest ones are not rules.

What we will give you is the number from the top of this page: in December the median walk here has 8.8 hours of usable light, and the median latest start is 09:21. Decide your turn-around time before you leave, against your route’s own figure, and treat it the way you would treat a summit — a place you have agreed to be at a certain time.

We are not alone in framing it that way rather than as a rule. The BMC: “The short days of winter mean less room for manoeuvre when it comes to timing. Get an early start, know what time the sun is due to set”, and “late starts mean a reduced margin of error and a greater chance of having to walk in the dark.” BMC (opens in new tab) The number at the top of this page is that advice with your route’s own arithmetic done.

The reason to do it in the valley is that the decision is much harder at four in the afternoon, on the ground, in the cold, with the top apparently close. That is the moment the rescue figures above are describing.

Common questions

Do you need an ice axe to walk in the Lake District in winter?

It depends on the ground, not the date. The British Mountaineering Council put the threshold in terms of consequence rather than conditions: “If you're on terrain where a slip has nasty consequences then you should be using an axe.” Carrying one is not the same as being able to use it, and we would recommend learning on a course before you need it — that is our recommendation, not the BMC's.
